Mr. Hauer had several other fanatical evil movie roles much appreciated by fans of such. But here as Batty he was thoughtful and playful as well. For me, this movie with only other cast members, practical effects and CGI would have been much less without Hauer's life in character. He reached beyond himself as few ever do.
