Just took delivery of my 2020 prime limited. Awesome ride. This is a great vehicle. It replaces a 2008 Prius. Can the supplied charging cable be used for 240 volts? the YouTube video from joetechtipsoetechtips says it can. (Sorry about Having to disguise the URL). Does anyone have any official information from Toyota that says it can or can’t? I’m not looking for personal opinions. Can anyone quote the official word from Toyota? Also anther issue... I can’t seem to get the HUD to activate. It worked one of the short trips I took but it is no longer working. I’ve combed the manual to no avail. There must be some setting I’m missing. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim
Officially? No. Possible? Yup. Using the Primes 120v Charger at 240 Volts, Cost $20 !!! | PriusChat Press the HUD button to the left of the steering wheel. Once to activate speedo (and radar cruise when in use), twice to activate speedo + Hybrid System Indicator + EV range. Third time turns it back off.
Welcome to PriusChat ! ************************* Hi Jim, I'm Rob43 and I am the source of Joe's helpful video. So yes, your 120v OE Toyota EVSE works flawlessly at 240 volts all day long. I build perfect working high quality Pigtails using all copper & 10 AWG wire, let me know if you want one. Rob43
[Note: I bought a 6-20p to 5-20r pigtail myself] Since the wisest way to implement a 240 volt adapter for the EVSE cable uses a 120 volt receptacle mis-wired to provide 240 volts.* No company in the world would have an official position that this was a good idea. Individuals have confirmed that the electronics are identical between European (240) and North American (120) delivered cables. If you go this way, it is your responsibility to prevent random people from plugging 120 volt only devices into a receptacle that looks like 120 volts but supplies 240 volts. *The Prime cable contains needed thermal circuitry in the 120 volt plug, so just cutting it off and replacing it with a 240 volt plug is not wise.
Yes, I do that, and except for the one brief trip, it just doesn’t work. Here’s another odd tidbit. When I turn on HUD the screen to modify the HUD settings appears. The left and right buttons control the brightness fine, but the up and down arrows do not change the elevation. As a matter of fact, there is a very faint hum when the up and down arrows are pressed.
Yes, good cautionary advice. I will install a 240 volt outlet and use an adapter for the charging cable.
In my case I have a 20 Amp breaker and line running to the outside of the house, so I used that with a 6-20r. If it is a clean sheet design, I would have my electrician use a 50 Amp breaker and a 14-50r receptacle for the 240. Here is a custom cord adapter designer NEMA adapters
Wow... The Adapter Link you posted is the BIGGEST RIPOFF I've ever seen ! With shipping prices are over $100 dollars. Rob43
Great ! But why do I need a "Website" to build a great custom adapter ? As you can see from all the different posted pictures and testimonials, my $49 adapters work Perfectly. Rob43
