I'm NZ based. My yearly commute is 20,000km a year on 90km/h road 80% of the time. 20% city driving. NZ oil price are $2/L here. Looking at Prius (12-13) with ~80k km sells for NZD15k Auris 1.8 (10-12) with ~80k km sells for NZD12k At 90km/h flat road, the Prius uses about 4L/100km, Auris 1.8 uses 6L/100km. Therefore, Prius saves me NZD800 a year. Prius is one of the most reliable cars but users reported issues likeEGR clog (NZD$600 for cleaning),oil burning (so I avoid 2010-2011)blown head gasket brake actuator inverter worn battery (after 10 yrs). Some of them are less prevalent BUT they are big ticket items enough to off set all my fuel saving. Corolla Auris 2010-2012 must have its fair share of problems but less likely to cost a lot of money. I plan to drive them to 200k-300k kms. My main focus is lowest cost possible, trouble free. Thank you folks!
welcome! the big question: who will repair it for you? if the auras is not a hybrid, i would probably go with that
Hi! thanks bisco for the welcome. There are very few 'hybrid specialist' here in new zealand. Any sort of service or repairs in NZ are always more expensive than other countries due to small and isolated geography. Are you suggesting the corolla auris because prius parts cost much more than a non-hybrid corolla auris? Thanks
I would expect any car imported from Japan would have only Japanese language displays that cannot be changed. I know that is the case with the Prius. I know the Prius is sold in neighboring Australia. @alanclarkeau can give more details on Toyota hybrids there.
yes, if you cannot diy, even over here with standard importing, repairs are extremely expensive, due to lack of non dealer repair shops and costly parts like brake actuator, battery, a/c compressor and etc. even a simple combo meter here, which can be purchased for $100., a dealer would charge $1,000. to install.
hi! I owened prius 2012 with 352k km, was great ijust sold not to lose money, now i have auris 2013 hybrid, great car, but auris is smaller, uses same amount of gas, more comfortable, less noise, more filling of car than in prius. but to be honest next car I'll try to get prius 2014-15.
