Hey everyone I checked the other threads on this but still confused... it’s a 2008 prius with about 74k miles and when I fill it up at what gas station it only gets to about 3-4 gallons then the pump clicks like it’s full and I keep filling it and gas eventually starts overflowing out. It’s very confusing. Is there a consensus on what this problem is? and how to fix it? Someone said to use the pump upside down, some say to do it slow, but either way it still overflows and the digital gage inside says it’s full when it’s not. Any help appreciated!
Your Prius has a bladder issue. Best way to deal with it is to try and expand the bladder out as it is collapsed. Good luck and keep us posted .
What I’d do if I had a similar situation was to track how many miles I have gone then determine how much gas I put in. If you only get a small amount, I’d drive for a bit then try to pump again if you know there is room.
Is it overflowing because you keep trying to put more fuel in after it shuts off, or does it overflow because it doesn’t shut off? The only time my car overflowed was when the gas station had a problem with their pumps running too slow for the sensor to work.
It overflows because I keep trying to put more in after it clicks. Last fill up I could only put 3.5 gallons in before it clicked. I tried filing with the pump upside down, and opening the cap for a minute before filling. I’m still looking for a solution to this.
How many dots on the fuel gauge when you decide to fill up? How many miles driven? How many dots after normal fill-up when pump stops? Do you have a CEL for any emission control systems?
Well it usually goes down pretty fast, I think there were two dots left last time. I didn’t count last time but about the right amount for 4 gallons at 40 mpg. Says completely full dots when fill up again Sorry not sure what a CEL is
