So a couple of times our 2007 Prius with 222K had an issue where the TOD came on and system lost power, running on engine only. Took about 30 seconds to go from 0-45MPH. Pulled over, sat for a minute and lights came on but hybrid system started charging the battery again. This past weekend - wife and daughter took the car to Augusta with no issues whatsoever. Yesterday driving around same issue came up and would not fix, regardless of how long it sat or disconnecting and reconnecting the 12v battery. Pertinent details: 222K miles Replaced hybrid battery 2 ish years ago by Green Bean Replaced 12v around the same time (Voltage 12.5 when nothing running, 14.2 when running) Codes are u0111-208 and u0111-531 read with TechStream Any ideas???
Update - had 12v battery tested - perfectly healthy. Called Green Bean - informed there would be other codes in addition to U0111 if the battery ECU were failing.
DTC | U0111-208 | Lost Communication with Battery Energy Control Module "A" DTC | U0111-531 | Lost Communication with Battery Energy Control Module "A" DESCRIPTION The HV control ECU transmits and receives signals to and from the ECM, battery ECU, skid control ECU, power steering ECU, and the gateway ECU via CAN (Controller Area Network) communication. DTC No. INF Code DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area 1 U0111 208 CAN communication problem between battery ECU and HV control ECU (no signal input) • CAN communication system 2 U0111 531 CAN communication problem between battery ECU and HV control ECU (CAN communication system malfunction) • CAN communication system MONITOR DESCRIPTION If the HV control ECU detects a malfunction in the CAN communication with the ECM or battery ECU, it illuminates the MIL and sets a DTC. U0111: 1 Related DTCs U0111 (INF 208): Receiving check for the specific frame U0111 (INF 531): Receiving check for the all frame 2 Required sensor / components Main: Battery ECU Sub: CAN bus line 3 Frequency of operation Continuous 4 Duration U0111 (INF 208): 0.1 second or more U0111 (INF 531): 1.6 seconds or more 5 MIL operation 1 driving cycle 6 Sequence of operation None The codes suggest a problem with the CAN (Car Area Network) rather than a specific ECU.
Thanks for the info. Guess the question now is how much digging I can/want to do into the CAN Bus or whether it might be time to let her go...
To add - also have C1259 and C1310 which still points to the CAN I believe. The Hybrid controller and the Hybrid battery just don't want to talk...so sad at the holidays when folks don't talk to one another LOL
C1259 is the EBC ECU acknowledging that it has been told there is a HV System Regenerative Malfunction C1310 is the VSC ECU acknowledging that it has been told there is a Malfunction in HV system. If the various ECU's can't talk to each other because of the CAN communication problem, they go into a fail-safe condition. Check the connector on the ECU in the HV battery (is that the HV battery ECU??) for corrosion or damage to the pins.
Yeah I think I give up. Happy New Year lol! Have been through the car 3 times. No corrosion or damage to the pins on any of the 3 connectors to the ECU. Canbus wires have continuity all the way back to the HV battery. Techstream sees all the ECUs except for the Hybrid battery. Car still starts and runs but engine comes on immedately after the 3 clicks from the battery, but surges and acts like it wants to move forward even in park until the engine warms up. Idle stays fairly high. It only shows that U0111 code with the 2 subcodes and the two C codes under the ABS/TRAC/VSC system. Might be time to start singing the "Frozen" song...
But think how many places you've been with this one. If Techstream sees everything but the battery ECU, and you haven't found any wiring issues, maybe try a battery ECU? Might be possible to get for cheap. (Requires personal protective gear for high voltage when replacing, though.) Then you can be back on the road with the car you've been with all this time. Otherwise, it's into the unknown.
Where is the battery ecu? The one in the hybrid battery itself? I’ve had u0100 u0111, along with several other codes, but I have many hv batteries but still can’t get my car running. See Confusing codes help, no start (U0100,u0111,p0af0, p3000,p3004,p0420) | PriusChat please help! I don’t want to let her go. It was actually Rodney kings daughters car. Fun fact.
