I just noticed the "key in the car" indicator light on the panel flashes when the car is off. I have a new 06 Prius (bought it 2 months ago). Everything works well otherwise. Is this normal? I never noticed it flashing before, and thus it appears to me to be something new as of a few days ago. I put the key fob into the ignition slot and took it out; as well as removing my phone charger from the cigarette lighter - it still is flashing when the car is off. Any reason for concern?
It's the theft deterrent system light. It's just telling you (and potential thieves) that the car is immobilised (and armed if you have an alarm)
Section 2-1 "Operation of Instruments and Controls" of your Owner's Manual. (Pages 20-21 in my 2004 Manual) There you will find a thorough explanation of the Hybrid Vehicle Immobilizer System. There's also a great deal more useful information in your Owner's Manual.
