Old CRT TV's were 4:3, and computer industry just used parts from the TV one for monitors. The switch to wider formats had nothing to do with scamming customers. Movies were always made in a wider format than TV programming. When a movie aired on TV, cable, or to video tape, the edges of scenes had to be cropped off. With the growth of home video watching, widescreen TV's came to be in order for movies made for a theater to be viewed in their intended size format without black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Overtime, the widescreen ratio became the norm for TV's, and computer monitors are still made with TV parts.
