Hello, my 2014 prius plug in makes a rattling noise when the gas motor starts. The noise only happens when I'm going slow; if I'm on the freeway there is now noise. I've linked a video of the noise. It doesn't happen when the car is only running on electricity.
It's really hard to make out the specific noise from the video. But it sounds a little like a low speed noise I got when I first got my used PiP. It turned out that the plastic clip in the hood that holds the free end of the hood support would come loose if you closed the hood too hard. That let the end of the hood prop bounce around on the engine when it was a a low rpm and rocking more than at high speed. It sounded really scary, but when I popped the hood and saw what it was I had to laugh. Then I had to go buy a new plastic clip. LOL! I hope your noise is that easy to find and fix.
The noise can be heard in the beggining of the video and the 39th second mark more clearly. I'll try recording it again and see I can get it more clearly
i can hear the rattle in the backround with my hearing aids turned all the way up. probably a heat shield, plastic aero cover or other loose part. sometimes engine noise drowns out odd noise, but it is still there. other times, only acceleration causes a noise
I dont think the noise occurs when the car accelerates; the noise is pretty noticeable when you are sitting in the car. It seems to only happen when the gas motor turns on and when I'm not going at fast speeds. Probably under 30mph if I were to give an estimate. Also, the noise happens regardless of I'm accelerating or not as long as the gas motor is running.
gotta be something rattling around in the engine compartment or exhaust sytem. but then again, at 105k, have you ever cleaned the egr circuit?
I notice a buzz in a certain narrow rpm zone, sometimes; a little higher or lower and it goes away. That's been reported frequently here; some sort of harmonic?
