NAPA oil/filter deal. Is it good?

    NAPA is offering a 5-qt jug of their Full Synthetic oil (usually $26.34) together with their Platinum filter (made by Wix, I understand; usually $18.99) for $22.98.

    Is NAPA oil good? I've used Mobil 1 full synthetic for my previous oil changes on this car, sometimes Castrol on other cars.

    Great deal. Long as it’s the 0w-20 non-high mileage & change it at 5,000 miles, you’ll be fine. Hell even supertech and amazon oil will get the job done.

    I found a few online discussions of NAPA oil, but I was interested in reports from Prius users more specifically. Many suggestions around the 'Net that it's simply relabeled Valvoline, which is a reputable brand that I've never used.

    For the first year that we had this car, it was serviced under their warranty by the Subaru dealer from whom we bought it, and the service records simply say "bulk oil," so who knows where that came from?

    And for that matter, where does the Toyota dealers' "bulk oil" come from?

    I use Toyota bulk 0W20. It's supposedly the same oil as the bottle, and I'm inclined to believe it. There's no real business model currently though, for a DIY'r to buy bulk oil. As far as I know. I just talked to the service manager of our local dealership, told him I was tired of creating used oil bottles, could they sell me oil if a brought a container. And he said sure. They seem to charge me $25 CDN, regardless of what I get, between 7 and 10 liters. I get enough for two oil changes, either two of mine, or one for me and one for my son's car.

    I just checked out the NAPA site and not just the "front page ad," and found that they rank their own oil as only the 3rd choice for a 2015 Prius, equal with Valvoline SynPower Full Synthetic, the top choice being Valvoline with MaxLife Full Synthetic High Mileage -- but (a) why are they recommending a high mileage oil without knowing how many miles the car has done (unless it's based on miles-per-year averages)? and (b) I didn't see a 2nd-ranked oil.
    I'm inclined to skip this great deal and settle for a $12 mail-in rebate on Mobil 1 at our regional supermarket.

    Steer clear of oils with the label "high mileage", it's a euphemism for oil with ingredients intended to swell gaskets. Unless you've got runaway oil consumption.
