Not exactly Alt-Fuel news but, just read that the Toyota Land Cruiser will no longer be for sale in the US as of 2022. Competition and it’s almost $90,000 price tag has done it in. It’s not the biggest SUV in Toyota’s line-up, the Sequoia is by at least 10 inches. It’s not the stuff you can see that made this SUV great but the engineering underneath that made this the most rugged SUV in their line-up and arguably anybody’s. My guess is trying to get this on a TNGA platform would make too many sacrifices. Is The Toyota Land Cruiser Really Being Discontinued? iPad ? Pro
That's interesting - they seem to think the new model is definitely coming to Oz. They sold 479 last month - which, in our small market, is significant. Our top-selling vehicle, for the first time ever, was the RAV4 (4309). MOST interesting was "Figures from Toyota show more than 80 per cent of RAV4 sales in July were HYBRID." ALSO significant was "Toyota says more than 40 per cent of its overall vehicle [TOYOTA] sales in July were hybrid"
I don't see Toyota switching the Land Cruiser to an unibody. The current one is on the Tundra frame, and some markets actually use it off road and for work.
TNGA is all about a design and manufacturing philosophy, it does not strictly mean platforms. If a vehicle requires a specific platform, or a change in a current not yet TNGA, it will be developed under the new principles, along with componentes and drivetrains. We'll have to wait and see, but dropping it would be a big loss in history.
Toyota might be hoping the few people that bought one are willing to move up to its Lexus sibling. Then the new Tundra is expected for 2022. When the Land Cruiser is finally redone, it could come back.
Well it just means Toyota wants to sell it as an LX. That's what's we've had for 25 years - we've only had the LX in Canada, not the Land Cruiser (although curiously, Toyota Canada lists Land Cruiser sales but it must be for fleets only). Also, I believe Toyota wants to continue V8s only in $100k+ cars so the choice is either to make the Land Cruiser US$100,000 or drop it.
The hybrid Tundra is rumored to use a turbo V6, and F150 has shown a turbo DI engine can replace a V8 in a truck.
hmm Rav4 prime adds about 900 lbs and 99 hp to the 2wd standard Rav4 model. The land cruiser has a 381 hp v8. The hybrid tundra is rumored to have a turbo v6 and total hybrid power of 450 hp. The turbo 6 in the audi q8 delivers 335 hp. Could a future 500 hp land cruiser phev be better off roading with electronic motor control and a big battery? The battery and motor generators will add weight but the engine will shave some, and its really heavy already. US based tundra, hybrid tundra, and tacoma will be on the upcoming F1 platform.
