My hybrid battery was replaced under warranty after 86k miles. The dealership tells me the new battery only had a warranty of 3 years starting the date they installed it. Is this true? Aren't all hybrid batteries warranted for 100k?
The 10year/100k warranty only applies to the hybrid drivetrain built into the car. Replacement parts can have their own warranty, which is 3 years in the case of the battery. But when's the last time you heard of an OEM battery going bad within 3 years, or even 10 for that matter? You should be good for another decade. OEM failure rates are extremely low.
In California your car's original hybrid battery warranty was 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. So I would assume your car got a warranty replacement within ten years of delivery which probably expired in 2014 or 2015 for your 2005 car. So the warranty battery would have three years or 36,000 miles from installation, which "might" have been until 2018 (2015 plus three) depending mostly on the date they installed. When was it installed? Hopefully its not giving you trouble.
If Toyota replaced the battery under warranty and gave you a new battery, that should last the rest of the Prius lifetime. I wouldn't even worry about a warranty at this point, especially when you have a 2005 model. Other items will break way before that replacement battery
It had to have been replaced at least five years ago given the factory warranty expired in 2015. She got a warranty battery at 86k. In another thread she reports the car having 126k earlier this year. My guess is she is having problems again or she would not have posted.
I got that she was having problems, but my point was the problems was probably related to other parts from a 2005, not the HV battery that was replaced. Many owners see a red triangle and associate it with a bad battery, which is what I think may be happening here
Thanks all. No probs with the hybrid battery. Back in 2014 when the original had to be replaced, it only had 86k on it. Pretty disappointing. So I now am wondering if this replacement battery only goes for the same mileage, I still have 30k left on it. No major probs with the car except it is thirsty for oil. I'm just thinking ahead to how long I should keep it.
