It's finally being rerun! Parts 1 and 2 are being rerun on 2/21/09 followed by 3 and 4 on 2/28. See Discovery Channel :: TV Listings :: Koppel: People's Republic of Capitalism for more info and check your PVR, TiVo, local listings for the proper time. It starts at 9 am Pacific for me on DirecTV. When I saw it the first time, I missed part 1 but saw parts 2 to 4. The series was very good. It's a scary to see how rapidly car ownership is growing in China. The pollution probs and demands on world oil will get a lot worse if the current pace continues. If you have an interest in China, this is a must see. There's also an interview w/Ted Koppel at http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/9163 about the show and it has a few clips. Re: excellent documentary on China - Koppel: People's Republic of Capitalism being rerun starting 2/ It's an interesting documentary that quite frankly scares the hell out of me
Re: excellent documentary on China - Koppel: People's Republic of Capitalism being rerun starting 2/ 1500 new cars per day in Beijing. It is a large city, but there are many others millions + cities in China. Over the last several months China car sales exceeded those in the US for the first time. Heard on local media here. As far as I can tell, basically everyone who can afford a car in China intends to buy one. That this might not be the best plan individually or related to wider concerns (fuel availability or pollution) is a minority viewpoint at most. Have not seen any of the Koppel doc. When was it produced?
Judging by the article dates and skimming their content, I'd guess it was done in a period spanning 07 to 08. Unfortunately, for some reason, it seems that Discovery nor anyone else reruns this. It'd make for a great rental or something to stream, if available.
Thread resurrection... I noticed someone put up copies on YouTube. Hope it doesn't get taken down. is part 3, focusing on cars. Here's are the other 3 parts: .
Haven't watched video... but after seeing that the original post was on 2009... Video should be on History channel rather than on Discovery channel now. I don't think I have that much interest in China.
Why not? They make everything. You can see the difference American workers vs. Chinese: no safety glasses in China!
Let's just say, I am not so interested in the capitalism in China or elsewhere for that matter. I have more interesting YouTube videos (for me at least) on "Watch later" list like this video.
Last time I checked out the History channel, the factories would need to be haunted or run by aliens in order for this to be shown.
That sounds like what I use to watch on SyFi channel. We haven't had TV service for years. The 500+ channels are now all converged? Or maybe aliens are jamming the satellite signals... LOL
Meh. I might give it a tumble, but China c-2008 is probably much further removed from today's China than we are from a time when there was only one kinda iphone. It might be interesting from a historical perspective, but I'm watching other things on the YooTubes these days....
