I have a Prius Prime 2020: i tried using google maps with apple carplay but it lagged by a full min on directions. Ive tried to use the built in system but it constantly tries to change your route and take route that do not make sense. Often it will suggested a route and project an eta but if I keep to the roads I know I arrive several min sooner than the original eta. The main issue I am trying to figure out is if I accidentally hit the map a target selector appears on the screen and I cannot return to my guidance view. Any help would be appreciated.
I actually like the Nav maps on my 20 Limited Prime better than CarPlay Google maps. I also like having the next turn show up on HUD, which does not happen with CarPlay navigation. On the other han, I like asking Siri to find a route MUCH more than using Toyota’s voice commands for selecting destinations. This, I use both systems routinely - one where I have time and patience to set the destination without Siri, and the rest if I’m on the fly, using the CarPlay maps. Is it worth it? Well, probably an unnecessary luxury, but I like having it.
I bought a new apple cord and I am hoping it will help. But yes despite its flaws I still like the built in system too. Just wished it was a little better sometimes.
I'm a salesman who travels to clients, and - among all salesmen I've ever spoken to - we all agree that Google maps beats all the others for finding locations. The only reason for a in-vehicle OEM navigation in the year 2020 is if that navigation system will do things to specifically help your specific vehicle where other systems will not. Case in point: some commercial truck navigation systems will route around, and warn of, low-entry / low-overhang bridges and such, as well as route around public roads that really aren't meant for 18 wheelers. So for a Prius, if that navigation system also monitors weather conditions and flooding, or deep snow, and warns around such obstacles since Priuses are such low vehicles, that would perhaps make it worth it. Perhaps the navigation system could warn of steep entries into parking lots so that we don't continually scrape the front spoiler trying to get in and out of locations? Otherwise, even with an iphone, I don't know why anyone would not use google maps. Apple maps is just bad, OEM navigation systems are worse.
Yes, Apple car play will solve your GPS problem. And yes Google maps works better that Apple maps but Apple maps have gotten better. Don't forget that Apple has better privacy policy than Google. Research it, Google maps tracks you even when you're not using the Apps. There is a reason why Google Apps are free. Stick with native Apps.
I’m down to two 2020 XLE AWD, one with and one without nav. I think I can get the dealer with nav down or pretty close to the price I was quoted on the non gps model. Should I bother with navigation ? I now use Waze and Apple play on my current Prius and Lexus. Have no problem using my iPhone which projects on to the screen. . Do I need the navigation package which may be really cheap or just buy the car without it? And is there a yearly charge for gps or just when updated? Does it need to be updated often?
If you're planning on using CarPlay, then I don't see why you would want navigation (unless you're thinking resale or you plan to take your car out of country and you don't have an international data plan). No annual charge. You just update the maps whenever you feel like it. Some people never update and some do.
So if I have to pay $800 for advanced tech package to get nav, don’t waste my money. But if they throw it in as part of the deal, take it???
In this day and age of people having a cellphone that can do GPS navigation, there is no real need for having in-car GPS navigation, which is like a thousand dollar option, or more.
Pretty much. I’m in the rare camp that likes built in nav. Saved the battery on my phone (I tend to keep my phones for longer than 2-3 years) and also US data plans are expensive in Canada. I realise things are different in the US.
But if it’s thrown in with the deal and won’t cost anymore or a few hundreds more than one without, should I take that deal?
I enjoy having the built-in navigation in my car. Even though it may not be as up to date as Google maps or Waze, it is more convenient and a great backup to phone based apps.
Since you're buying new, its always gonna cost something. Even if you got the price of the car with nav down to the price of the car without nav, you can always go further and argue that since the one without the nav is already that low, it should be lower since it doesn't have nav. But ... it's your money. IF nav is what you really want, and you can get the price down to the same as without nav, go for it.
