2010 with 230k. Started loud rattling/vibrating noise at low speed and when turning. Told it is problem with axial damper and it's a costly repair - around $4k. But it won't cause any driving problems - just noise. Anyone have any experience with this?
I would wonder if you have a bit of engine misfire that is causing the dampener to rattle. Misfire problems are fairly common, dampener problems are not. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
I wonder if this was actually axle damper, or what Toyota calls the front drive shaft damper, shown in catalog Figure 43-02, Front Drive Shaft, with part name codes 43474D (right) and 43474E (left). I’d suggest asking for a written, itemized estimate, with the information required by provincial law, including the name and price of each part to be replaced. You could post it here or take it to another repair shop for a second opinion.
It’s the spring loaded plate between the trans and engine that’s smooths out the connection between the 2. Requires engine removal at the dealer that’s at $150 an hour Ch Ching. I wouldn’t put that kind of money in that car with such high mileage. But the fact it’s making noise means it’s probably coming apart.
