I purchased a 2008 Prius from a government facility with only 111000 miles. It had been sitting g a year or more. They said it ran fine but needs new batteries. I put in a new 12v. The dash comes on but it won’t start. When I press the start button with my foot on brake I hear a clicking in the back near the hybrid battery. The das lights come on but no start. Btw the mfd is bad (replacing it soon) so cannot go thru that for a check. Any suggestions? If hybrid battery is completely dead would that cause it not too start.
There's not enough charge in the hybrid battery to start the engine and you need to charge and balance it with a high volt trickle charger like the ones sold by Maxx Volts and Hybrid Automotive. If they said it needs new batteries (eg two) then its likely the high voltage battery is bad as well. It turns over the engine. You could get a bluetooth obd2 reader and an app like Dr Prius to gather better information on the current condition. Or get it to a hybrid shop or Toyota dealer for a diagnostic. Trying to "refurb" the battery is time consuming, requires tearing down the battery and skill, and ultimately may not last long if it works at all. That goes for third party refurbs as well. New is the way to go from $1600 diy to $3000 installed. First be sure that is the problem. A bad jump can cause fuses and fusible links to blow.
I would first try to put 4 gallons of gas in it and see if it’ll fire up. With the combination meter not working, you can’t see the gas meter
odb reader said low hybrid battery, so I guess that's my next step. anyone have a good recommendation for new hybrid battery shipped to georgia? I'm sure I can install it myself.
