I need to replace my front pads and rotors on my 2008 prius. I have never performed one on a hybrid and need to know what needs to be disconnected to make sure the pistons don't push out on there own. Do I just disconnect negative battery cable and how do I de pressurize the system so that the actuator won't power on. Thank you in advance for any help. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
You should be able to find some indepth posts with some digging on the front and rear brake changes. Mainly people recommend disconnecting the 12v battery in the trunk and putting your smart key away from the car so it doesnt trigger the brake acuator. For added safety, people also recommend pulling out the "two ABS relays in the fuse box". When i did my brake change front and drum brakes, i just disconnected the battery and kept my smart key a good 15-20ft away from the car, i did not pull the fuses.
For Gen 2, you can change it like any other vehicle. However Gen 3 is equipped with electronic rear brakes, you will need to disconnect 12V when disassemble brake system. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
I'll submit that you'd also rather not have a Gen 2 brake system awaken or self-test while you are working on it. Like Gen 3, it can awaken for a variety of reasons, like opening of the driver's door. Strictly speaking, just awakening isn't a problem, even if the pump runs, as that only pressurizes the head end. But it may run self tests later (Gen 3 does for sure, a few minutes after shutdown) that involve pressurizing the lines.
