Does any other country have these? See: Spelling Bee 2021: Louisiana teen Zaila Avant-garde becomes the first African American contestant to win I finished second in a much lower-level Bee and winning words here were much harder. Winner's family name seems to be 'Avant-garde' and that in itself is ... dang. Winner here also has some Guinness record for bouncing basketballs. Winner here, I hope, will be left to her own devices to create an interesting future. No less for the 10 or more 'losers' who invested themselves so much and made only one mistake. == Whoever reads this might be past 'contributing', but not past knowing that the human enterprise will need new young brainpower. How should that be found and developed? Spelling bees seem as dull knives.
Welp.... She'll have 50-large to spend for college - or? maybe a Huskies scolarship at UCONN followed by a few WNBA seasons given her fondness for the round-ball. HOWEVER (comma!!!) she'd better hurry with the latter, given title IX's abandonment of their original charter....something that might be a blessing for this bright young lady if she decides on a more STEMulating career. Either way? She's a scrapper with an eye-catching handle.
Which thing? Changes women's collegiate sports or spelling bees? I'm frequently something of a critic of our schools, but I do not have a problem with spelling contests in general. We do the same thing with science 'fair' projects and other STEMmy things. Sometimes it makes the national news. Sometimes it doesn't.....
