Could somebody tell me what this rusty prt is that is leaking oil from its loose seal? Also could you tell me if it’s normal for this to be this rusty? Or did the dealership replace this part with a very dirty nasty part and put some non oil resistant sealant on it?
Also is it normal for that dark bolt right below the red circle to be slightly sticking out? I managed to unscrew and tried tightening it more but it already seems pretty tight the way it is in that photo.
For anyone looking at your pic, first chore is to figure out where it is. Can you clarify: roughly where on the engine is that, what's your point-of-view, ie: looking up, down, sideways?
My guess is that I am looking upward from behind the engine block, with the exhaust manifold off to my left, and the circle is around the no. 1 chain tensioner assembly. And yes, that guy is steel, which gets rusty-looking, while the rest of the timing chain cover is aluminum, which doesn't, so it will always look rusty by comparison. Doesn't affect function. The thing below it appears to be a pipe plug, the sort that is sometimes installed at the factory to close an opening through which one of the passages inside the cover was bored. As long as nothing is leaking from it, I'd leave it alone. I'd never noticed it before, but I wasn't looking for it.
Thank you. I will just spray seal it with some oil resistant sealing then. It is dripping oil onto the ground (3-5 drops each trip, more for longer trips). iPhone ?
I don't know that the tensioner gasket by itself is such a big job. Need to know the trick for reinstalling the tensioner and releasing the hook, and avoid any disturbance of the crank or camshafts while it is out. Whole timing cover, now that's a job.
