I've been searching but the answers are extremely vague and help in no way. So here is the problem. 2006 with HID. Lights go on and then turn off. Turn the lights off and back on and they work then shut off again. Replaced both bulbs. Question: do the ballasts go bad on these? Seems like they can't hold the power anymore. Keeping in mind the car has 267k miles. Simple answers please. Need to get this fixed quick.
Perfect. So change the ballasts and hope for the best? Once that is done and the problem is still there what's the next step?
The HID lights only consist of the ballast and the bulb. If one side goes out at a time, you probably still have an issue with one or the other component. I hope you have installed original equipment quality parts. Some bulbs of questionable origin may not work very well. If you should find that both sides simultaneously are going off, then you need to look for a problem upstream like the H-LP relay or headlight switch.
They go out at different times. Bulbs I replaced with were OEM. They work great when you turn them on. They just go out. I will replace the ballasts and hope for the best.
Hoping I can gain some knowledge here with near similar issue. Car only has 155K but boy does it show aging beyond that, (bought used). My lights flicker, both sides, the passenger one goes out first. The driver side sometimes goes out as well. I turn the switch off and on and they come back on. If I change between high and low nothing changes. I smacked with hand the lights and they do not come on. Just don't want to change parts and hope it gets fixed, they are difficult to get to so like to see if can do it once. Not sure if the bulbs are bad or ballast is bad. Hope there is a way to diagnose it other than getting new bulbs and see if the issue still persists.
Yeah, I can't say that I have ever played with the high voltage ballasts on HIDs. I would just get a pair of cheap bulbs and put them in, see what happens. What you describe is what I typically see with bad bulbs. The "high beam" on those is a little "eyebrow" shutter at the top of the light. On low it blocks part of the beam. On high a solenoid lifts the shutter up to let more of the beam out. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
