After selling these Shift Power 4.0+ modules to various curious customers at the shop, finally decided to get one for myself to try on my Prius v 2012. So basically, in a nutshell is it's utilizing the full capability of the throttle pedal within the 3 different "modes" on the car within factory specs. (You obviously realize they "detuned" our Prius right at the pedal for starters). My favorite setting for the best MPG is "Eco" mode on the car and running "Race" mode on the module because you can stay in ECO mode but have a nice responsive "power mode x2" feeling to the pedal instead of that stiff mushy feeling. OR you can set to Power Mode on the car and "Race" mode on the module and rocket ship around..it's very versatile depending on how you drive. The photos are where and how I installed mine. Red circle attached to throttle is where it connects, and you can just tuck the module safely out of the way behind carpet and run the button up anywhere on your dash. The button has a tiny red connector that plugs in to the module as well (circled). Takes maybe 10 minutes or less for a novice to install. Yes, my God yes. It's amazing how de-tuned these throttles are from the factory...race mode actually will set you back in the seat a bit, kinda funny coming from torquey Diesels to have a Prius run like a scalded ape. No check engine lights, and not modifying any engine or ECU parameters is great. I should mention "full throttle" will be the same amount of power and MPG drainage as without this module, it just helps low and middle end "off the line" torque mostly. Couple this device with a Quantum Solenoid Track and a larger throttle body and you have a quick little ride.
I don't obviously realize that, but I'm willing to if offered evidence. Readers might want to compare this product to another similar one recently discussed here. That other one does some interesting (and patented) things, including having its own accelerometer built in, so that it can tease out which motions of the driver's foot are correlated with motions of the car. Its web site goes into some safety details about how it integrates into the scheme for redundancy and reliability that Toyota designed into the original pedal sensor and interface to the ECU. I'm not sure how this one stacks up in those areas.
The other one, mentioned in #4, is marketed for that. That's what its accelerometer trick is for. Sounds like this one is marketed for increasing vrooms.
Evidence? So you don't think the factory has programmed the pedal electronics to be more MPG and "Eco" friendly so people drive their Prius' more sparingly? This module doesn't alter drivetrain parameters.
It can if you use it correctly, like I mentioned in ECO mode on the car and a moderate setting on the module to give you a more responsive pedal in that mode is likely going to benefit you and make driving in that mode much more user friendly.
I think the factory has built a pedal that contains two magnets and two Hall effect sensors producing redundant voltage outputs that linearly track the pedal position. There is nothing in those electronics to be "programmed". Do you think something different? Once those voltages are read as inputs to the power management control ECU (or the outputs from your gizmo instead, if it is being used), the ECU can either use them as is, or map them along a PWR curve that is concave down or an ECO curve that is concave up, depending on what's your favorite button to push. There's no 'detuning' happening in any of those modes, just three different ways of mapping the same input domain onto the same output range. Are there graphs available to show the curves your gizmo applies?
certainly you can check the ShiftpowerUSA website and see. The factory mapping of each “mode” would be considered the “De-Tune” IMO so that people drive these cars slower based on that pedal resistance. This module on Race mode is certainly Un-Priuslike to say the least.
Stickers are known to increase power by up to 20% or 30 RWHP (FWHP), if applied properly. Do either of these come with stickers?
So there are three factory mappings: the identity function, one concave up, one concave down. Which of those are you calling the "De-Tune" and why? Or is it all of them?
The Horsepower bug is like a drug addiction...went through all that 20 years ago with Hotrods and Diesels. Swore I wouldn't with the Prius, so this will be the only additive going on the car.
