I am experiencing a loud whining noise that seems to be coming from the rear of the car while driving. the mechanic told me that it was tire noise since I have run flats mounted on my car. I believed them until I was driving down a dirt road recently and still heard the same sound. Any opinions about the noise?
My Bridgestone DriveGuard run flat tires don't whine. I'm thinking along the lines mentioned by schja. And, change mechanics.
You could check if the whine goes exactly with wheel speed. If you drive at 30 and then at 40, and that makes the whine sound like the first two notes of "here comes the bride", and you drive at 30 and then at 45, and that makes it sound like the first and second twinkle in "twinkle, twinkle little star", then it's something linked to the wheel speed, like a wheel bearing, for example.
