Wifey called me frantic that our G2 had stopped running on her while driving in local traffic. Red triangle went on. Luckily, she was able to steer off the road, hit the stop button, But then the car restarted and she was able to drive home? So I had her drive the car to our local indy with me following close behind. Thats when I noticed that when she was slowing the rear of the car started shaking 3-5 inches to left and right. This happened every time she was slowing to a stop and is visibly pronounced from like 5 mph to a full stop. Not sure if one problem is related to the other, but Im stumped as to what the rear end shake is.
Brakes not engaging on one side? I’ve noticed similar side-to-side action after a botched brake fluid change (another non-Prius car). Confirmed by raising rear and spinning wheels while wife applied brakes: one side wasn’t working, free-spinning when brakes applied.
If things move side to side when they're supposed to spin straight, first thing I would check is if the wheel lugnuts are tight. Might also have a VERY bad tire with a tread bulge or shifted belt. Don't care if the brakes aren't functional, leaking, worn out, or have square drums- I cannot think of a single fault that would cause side to side movement of the body. Does the car shake if she drive 0-5mph? As far as the master warning triangle, might be good to check all underhood fluid levels. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Tech tells me he is leaning towards the problem being the abs control module, but also said to replace the pump at the same time. Apparently, he's seen the pump fail right after changing the module before. I've been using this guy for about 5 years with all my cars & he's been pretty solid. He did say there was some reprogramming involved in the control module change out and told me if I get it off of ebay, he'd have to pull the part out of my car first for me to verify some numbers. The brake fluid was the first thing checked as well as the tires / wheels. All as they should be. I should ask him if he was able to verify an ABS issue with the rear wheels in the air. Finally getting around to jumping back into this. Up 'till now the only issue (other than that 2-3mph rear end shake) started showing up at initial start. With the first braking event backing out of a parking space. it took two taps on the petal to have the normal to touch power brakes instead of what felt like a brake petal without power assist. I didn't experience the brake drag that other have experienced until just now. So, I can't run from the repair any longer. The car itself is a base w/ 223k, I had to replace the three-way valve right after my purchase from Manehim Ft Laud & the VIN showed a battery replacement at 170k so the repair seems to make sense. I've read that there are cross over p/n's and I've found a few to reference. I found the below pn#'s on dealer web sites: 44500-47090 / now 44500-47091 / 2004-2006 Actuator assy. 44500-47140 / now 44500-47141 / 2006-2009 Actuator assy. The below pn#'s referenced by multiple suppliers but are not found by searching on dealer web sites, no Idea what they are. 44510-47050 44510-47051 44535-47050 Guessing if going new, 47141 is preferred. Some say avoid used. But others say there's no issue with used. But since the fail seems relatively common, is anyone doing remanufacturing or rebuilding? It seem that the Dorman 587-765 - ABS Control Module is unavailable until further notice. And the address for Prior Remanufacturing, Inc on Loopnet out of Dallas shows a vacant building with the Prior sign hanging half-way off the building. If no one is aware of anyone else that's rebuilding or re-manufacturing, it would be helpful if anyone who knows about the issue that some have posted about installing used units would comment. Seems that some state you need to pull the existing unit, compare the part number, and install the exact same part number to avoid issue with communicating with the pump. Others make no mention of this. Can anyone offer any insight or experience on this?
You don't have to pull the unit to get the number you can move the inverter and use a mirror etc I don't remember what your year model is but I think if I show you a picture of mine your part number is going to be the same I believe that's how it is and yes there was a rebuilder on eBay some folks have said maybe that wasn't the case. But the guy sent me a picture of this test rig I bought one of his units from him it's sat in my garage over a year before I got around installing it. Gearing the time that was going on I expressed to the dude that once I started on this and I had the car apart I needed to get it back together very quickly and it needed to be working so this guy sent me out another rebuilt ABS actuator accumulator pump assembly to make sure I had two in case the first one was bad or the second one or whatever I would have two He didn't even charge me for it I eventually installed it without incident it worked like a champ and still is. I went to find this guy back through my eBay receipts and whatnot and he's disappeared so I can't pay him for the second one that I have sitting here in the shop that I now don't have a car to put it in so I'll just hold on to it for the next one. So it seems rebuilding is maybe possible .
There is, however, a number visible on Gen 2 brake actuators, that looks the same as a part number, but isn't the part number.
Just posting the solution post. The pn on my unit happened to be 44510-47050. I picked up the cleanest looking one with this pn# on it off fleabay. Once installed the slow speed rear shake went away & so did the brake drag. All good
