For the last 6 months or so I have noticed a clicking noise coming from the front left axle area while turning right and using regenerative braking. First step the dealer disassembled the front brakes, cleaned and reassembled. That did not fix the problem so they agreed that the axle may be going bad. The new axle was installed today and for the time being, the noise is gone. I have read of other Prius axles clicking like this, but it must be a rare thing for an axle to fail on one of these models.
Mine has been doing that for the past 80,000 or so miles. Boots are ok, and there's no noise under load in turns, when failing joints typically make alarming noises.
Good to hear. Did you go with an oem axle? Most of the time an oem cv joint will last the lifetime of the vehicle unless they get a tear in the boot. In the old days we would change boots by themselves if noticed early and you would change the cv joint alone if it had failed. Today complete axle assemblies are the norm.
Yes, went with an OEM from the dealer since the vehicle is still under an extended warranty. I had a $100 copay.
