Hello all, Replacing my OEM 17" rims with the OEM 15" rims. Why? Because tire prices. Anywho, been getting them one by one on eBay as I'm preparing for new tires soon. Today I received my fourth rim, and it's just slightly different than the other three I already have. Has anyone seen this difference on the back side of the rim before? I'm wondering if it's just an updated design or older? Should there be any concern running this wheel with my set of three if it's a little different? Outside, rims look the same, and appear to be the same size. Just some markings are in slightly different places and the cutouts of material behind the spokes are more massive.
Huh, guess that info would help a little lol! The clean one is how all three of the ones I have already collected look. The dirty one I just received and is the one that's a bit different.
I would guess one is an aftermarket copy/replacement, not oem. "IF" they sold it as "oem", you could send it back, at their expence and no being correctly described.... If all the measurement are the same and the outer part looks the same, you can just clean them all up and use them. I got a replacement rim for my friend 2007 Mazda 3 and the outside was the same but the backside was different. I can tell the difference because the outside is slightly different, I forget what it is, but if you are not looking for it very closely, you can't tell. Cost a LOT less then one from Mazda!
There should be numbers in JJ mentions on the rim of the wheel the JJ is the style of the rim edge and then they'll be the width and the diameter and possibly some other letters and numbers that generally correspond to the run number size width and all that maybe a lot number. But if they look the same you should be good The main thing is that they balance without 40 g of weight on each wheel which can be a tire problem also if it takes a lot of weight. 17-in tire problems as in cost nah man not unless you want the $180 100,000 mile Michelin defenders or something then maybe there's a tire cost problem. I'm buying some tires that are made in Poland with the low rolling resistance on all of that and in the 17s I'm buying a funny size a 205 50 17 what am I paying like $49 a pop and I will take that at least my tires are always black on the car right as they're wearing out never any of this gray white business I hate that they hold the road well don't cost a lot and when they wound up getting 4x4 in the mud dirt you don't feel so bad about it.
Yeah, I was looking at quality tires instead of the off brands I usually get (currently Brevaros?) Cost of quality tires for me I was seeing 90-110$ for each 15" tire compared to 190-240 for each 17" tire. Yes I know you can get cheaper 17" tires, my current ones cost like $77 each, but for just a few more bucks I figure I can get a higher end 15" one. Not to mention, car has always had a slight tendency to pull Left, alignment was checked twice. So I'm also curious to see if better tires change anything.
This is one of the rims I have cleaned, and I have three that look exactly like this. I'll post the oddball next for comparison.
This is the odd ball. It's missing the part number on the inside (like very first picture in post above), and labels on the front are moved around a bit. Can aftermarket OEM replacement rims still say "Toyota" on them? Just trying to figure out what exactly they sent me, or if I should even care.
FWIW, here's one of our 3rd gen seventeen inch rims. The small pockets at the stud hole circle at least look like the outlier.
They're not made by Toyota. So their contracted by wheel makers and like same countries areas whatever so if Toyota orders X amount of wheels that's that. Then as more wheels are made for the aftermarket and for Toyota replacements for dealers and all of that has a lot runs change and various and sundry other things this is how we get here. I would say put a tire on it put a tire on all of them and if they all balance without taking ridiculous amounts of wheel weights and what have you You're golden and you shouldn't be worried about a thing except driving the car and keeping it running I guess.
Links? Always looking for deals and haven't seen actual LRR tires for the 17" wheels anywhere near that price! Edit: Just realized the tire you mentioned, link or not, isn't the correct OEM size. I'm not really looking to make changes like that, even though I know it's not a huge change. Sticking with the stock sizes makes it easier at the shops as well.
Yeah, I get that parts get contracted out to other companies. But what I'm asking is if anyone may know that this oddball wheel is some sort of a "variant" of an actual OEM rim, or aftermarket.
Just FYI, upon cleaning this new "oddball" rim, found corrosion has eaten away a lot of the metal from around the center inside hole. Decided to return it. I'll just have to be on the lookout for another deal to complete my set. Not worried about tires for another couple of months anyway.
