Hey I recently bought a 2008 Prius but missed a giant gash and cracks in the ICE coolant reservoir tank.
I’m currently waiting for the car lot I bought it from to get the part so they can replace it for free.
Is this a situation where I shouldn’t drive the car until I get it swapped? Or is this something I should search the junkyard and DIY? 2CE27815-35DD-4966-909F-3BA879E62F60.jpeg

It's not going to kill anything You need to put a little Asian red in there You can just put it right in that hole and then you could put a piece of zip tape over that and it'll be fine It should be no real pressure in there and you'll be all right till the part comes more than likely I don't think I would do anything about it especially somebody was getting the part for me for free I don't think I'd be running around trying to find one The car lot you bought the car from should have no problem finding one.

Was this car in a wreck, or did it overheat? Because if that is a stock overflow tank, it has seen better days.

The overflow tank on mine, AFAIK the original, has a clamp built into it which holds the hose going from the radiator fill neck into the overflow tank. That clamp is snapped off in the picture - just a hole there. The rest of that side is straight on mine. In the picture there is another bulge on the engine side. The hose looks too long. Normally it just goes out, turns 90 towards the back, down through the clamp, turns to the front, and into the tank. There is also a black and yellow sticker on top of mine which is absent in the picture.

the car had been in a wreck before I bought it so it could possibly be from that, from what I can see is that the fan shroud/coolant overflow is aftermarket since I’m able to just unscrew the overflow tank and remove it unlike on the OEM shroud

Check that the front bumper is properly bolted on (all bolts present) and has the energy absorbing pad installed. I once had a car that had had minor front end damage (previous owner overshot when parking and ran into a concrete wall). The body shop replaced the bumper, but not the styrofoam pad which is there to absorb some of the energy in a crash. I didn't notice until years later when the bumper cover had to come off for an unrelated reason. My daughter-in-law's car was hit by a bus, and the body shop in that case left off half the bolts when they were putting it back together, including 2 for the bumper. But they did put on the absorber pad.
