if the all wheel drive has a 40 hp rear electric motor and the M20A-FXS inline four-cylinder 2.0L gas engine 196hp does that mean it has a combined 236 hp? I can’t find specific horsepower numbers on the all wheel drive! What makes the prime 220 hp? A lot of the reviewer’s say the 23 Prius is quicker all around. I’m just wondering if there is a difference between 2WD and AWD!
If I recall correctly, the AWD has just 2 hp more than FWD, so 196 hp. The FWD has 194. I don’t think the rear motor contributes that much difference in overall power. I can’t say I know much about the technical side of it, though, that’s just what I’ve read. I’m sure there’s others here that can dive deeper into the subject.
It doesn't work like that. Horsepower figures are not simply additive in a hybrid. For the Prius, the ICE is 150hp, the front motor is 111hp, and the rear motor is 40hp. For the Prime, the ICE is still 150hp, but the front motor is 161hp. Net system horsepowers are 194hp for the FWD, 196hp for the AWD, and 220hp for the Prime. 0-60mph times are 7.1 sec, 7.0 sec, and 6.6 sec, respectively.
The amount of power the electric side contributes is limited by the electricity supply. The system hp rating is based upon the consistent level of that supply. Doesn't matter much which motor that electricity goes too.
