I have a 2004 Prius with only 136,000 miles and have been advised by my trusted technician that it will cost me north of $5,000 to repair/replace. I see reconditioned / used transmissions for $500-$600 online with warranties. Why is every shop I ask quoting me $5000+? Am I missing something?

What obd2 code did you retrieve that pointed you in the direction of a transmission replacement?

So just buy you a transmission from a Gen 2 car that was running that was just put out of service they're all over the place depending upon where you are I have two here and then take it to somebody who changes out transmissions it should cost about $200 to get it swapped out It's not that big of a job actually they practically fall out of these things

It’s a big job, and mechanics are too busy and would prefer you went somewhere else, so they throw out a big number to hopefully scare you off
