We have a 2015 Persona model with about 40,000 miles, and from time to time, pressing start doesn't put our car into Ready mode. I have to turn the car on and off multiple times, and eventually it will turn on. It doesn't happen every time or everyday, but enough to be concerned. The first time it happened was last Jun (2016), we took it in, and they said they couldn't reproduce the issue and nothing was coming up in the diagnostic check. Any ideas? If it helps, the radio also resets during this process, in case that gives any indication of anything.

    Here's the rundown:
    Foot on brake
    Press start button
Car turn's on, but not into Ready
    Foot still on brake
    Press start button again
Radio resets, car still not in Ready
    Press start button again
    Car doesn't shut off
    Press start button again
    Car off
    Repeat until car turns on

    Thanks for the help!

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

Sounds like you have a loose 12 volt battery connection as the radio resets each time the car does not “ready”.

I would start by checking in the back of the Prius at the battery and see if both leads are tight;).

    Hope that helps (y).

Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll have to look at that tomorrow, and I'll report back if it works.

If the connections at the battery terminals are snug, make sure you check the connection of the ground cable to the body too.

If it wasn't for the radio resetting, I would suspect a bad brake sensor switch. The car will not go to Ready if it doesn't sense that the brake pedal is bring depressed.

as xliderider said above, make sure your brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal. and don't hit the power button too quickly, press the brake firmly, then press power.

I have a 2013 doing this exact same thing. Over the last few months it progressively got worse and worse until it was rare to start on the first try. Brake lights go on, radio resets.

I got the car into maintenance mode and checked the battery, I can't recall the # but I think it was an adequate.
A couple of weeks ago I did disconnect the terminals + remove the orange clip from back, let them sit for a while and the computers reset. Then after that for a couple of weeks it started up normally 98% of the time and on the second try the other 2%, however now it's gone back to not starting up for 1-5 minutes.

I cleaned the terminals yesterday and let the car reset again, but it didn't change anything this time.

Where is the ground connection to the body? I've not tried that.

Use a voltmeter and measure the voltage of the 12v battery at the battery and also the jumper point in the front. What do you measure?

How old is your 12v battery?

Thanks for the tips, I'll check and get back to you!

I THINK it may be the original battery, we bought it used.
