Hello, I have a 2006 Prius. I replaced both front wheel bearings, outer tie rods, and lower ball joints. I bought the tie rods from O'Reilly, MasterPro brand. I noticed I had to screw both all the way in until bottoming out to get the car to drive straight. After driving for several months, the front tires got excessive premature wear at the outer ends exposing the wires. I took the car to get an alignment but they couldn't because there was no more thread left to adjust the wheels straight. The tech told me the tie rods are too long and maybe wrong. I don't have the old ones anymore to compare but they did not appear different when I initially replaced them. Could a bad/worn rack and pinion get longer on both ends to cause this issue? This has be stumped. TIA

No somehow you've got the wrong tie rods any tie rods you replace them with need to be the same length from the point that they screw on to the rack assembly they need to measure the same amount hard to explain but easy to do but you would need originals to get that measurement I have a card sitting up in the air with the rack undone and everything but it's pouring rain down here maybe tomorrow afternoon it might be dry enough for me to measure but you need to have the correct measurement or else you're going to have if they're too long too much toe in and if they're too short too much toe out and write in the middle where you need to be apparently you can't get to because they seemingly are too long.

Did you find out that you got the wrong castings or something? I mean push come to shove if you know how much adjustment thread you need in a pinch you could cut off the very end of the threads that the tie rod screws to so you have more space until you bottom out of course that would not be correct to do in a field situation I guess If you had to You really want to get the right castings given that's the only thing that's been changed I didn't realize there was multiple part numbers for the generation 2 for the outer tie rod ends themselves or you got some for a Corolla or something else I don't know The originals are gone measuring from the center of the tapered stud aimed straight up to the end of the barrel that the threads screw into of the original part and your part will net you the difference in millimeters or what have you. I imagine somewhere online this drawing or measurement is available I can get this measurement in about 2 hours I have the parts hanging assembled right now staring at me but it's dark.

I prefer to get most parts from the dealer, as I don't have problems with fit, and the originals have lasted (usually) a long time.

Thanks for your reply. If you get a chance, could you measure yours? Thanks again.

So the measurement from the end of the tie rod where the nut would run up and hold the setting from that to the center of the tapered shaft should be right at 6 and 3/8 in and with the shape of these things I wouldn't think you could really get a mistaken part I guess there may be other cars that are close to this but I don't know maybe you got one from a Pontiac vibe or something but this is laying the tape measure flat touching the nut locking ring that's built onto the nut and measuring to the center of the tapered shaft looks like right at 6 and 3/8
