Someone brought a Gen 4 to Tampa Hybrids, with around 300k miles on the odometer, and against their advice had them do an EGR cleaning. It turned out to be a waste of time; EGR interior had very little deposits. Toyota learned how to do it right, on the backs of Gen 3 owners. Oil catch can is probably still a good idea; you could tell by pushing the throttle blade open, see what it looks like. A shiny pool of oil would be the tip off.
Toyota learned how to do catalyzed EGR, on the backs of years research that was conducted industry-wide and published during the gen 3 production years.
