Love my Gen 5 prime, but once every month or so, the tailgate opens by itself. I'm not touching the key fob, it just does it spontaneously.

This problem is rare, but any vehicle with a power tailgate is at risk. It's also been reported in Chevy, GMC, Ford, Mercedes and BMW vehicles. And those are the ones I know about. Nobody seems to know what causes it, let alone how to fix it, other than disabling it. Since it was designed as a power tailgate, it's a real pain to open it manually.

The only thing I can think of is some stray signal from some electronic device that just happens to be at the same frequency in the neighborhood is setting it off.

If that's the case, would it be possible to change the frequency/code the vehicle and key fob use, so as to prevent this from happening again?

It could be a defective fob. Put it inside a tin box when you are home so that you block the radio signal and see what happens.

And you've lost me: if it happens say only once a month it's ok?

Out of thousands of vehicles of various makes, only a handful have reported this problem on the internet. I believe that's the definition of "rare".

I don't think it's the fob. When I'm at home, the fob is out of range and can't open the tailgate.

I never said or implied it was ok. In fact the purpose of this thread is to fix the problem. If it was "ok", why bother?

It's not about me thinking it's OK or not.
I'll worry about it if it happens.
Or if someone is hurt by it.

Well, perhaps try putting the car in a Faraday cage then. LOL

It could also be a defective part in the car.

I'm guessing that Toyota is engineering a new key fob with better security.
They'll probably have us turn in the original for two new ones.
