2012 with Service Hybrid System warning

    I’m familiar with how the 12v battery works in the Prius. That’s also why brand should be a non-issue, I’d think.
    I also believe the issue lies with the charging circuit or similar.
    I just don’t have the ability to run diagnostics on that for long periods to find it. I had hoped the dealer would, and I suppose if I wait until it happens again, after getting the OEM battery, maybe they will look a bit deeper.
    I looked at it yesterday, got 12.3v with key on, not “Running”, dropping to 12.0 after a very short time. Then started and it jumped to 14.8v.
    I’m going to check it again today with a meter at the battery and up front, just to see if there is a loss between, though I’d hope the dealer would have caught that since their entire focus seemed to be the battery.

    you can use any old battery in a prius, that's not the issue.

    the new 12v could be defective, but unlikely. you'd have to rut a meter on it and watch what it's doing while driving.
    an obd app could do that.
    a new battery with a full charge should start close to 13 volts static, after the car has been off a few hours. and after driving at least 20 miles, it shouldn't drop at all.

    short trips or not driving can bring it down slowly.

    Any suggestions for an obd app?
    I looked at Dr Prius (I think that’s the name.
    Have BlueDriver, but not something my wife could use, and she’s the one driving long distances in it, so ideally I’d like to find something she could run and track data. Obviously if that won’t work, I can try to work in a long drive in or or two, but getting it away from her work schedule is an issue.

    For the most simplicity:

    Or something like it. Choices are nearly infinite. Just keep an eye on it from time to time. I always have mine plugged into my 12V socket.

    For more sophistication:

    Or something similar. This one shows a graph of your battery voltage. I'm considering ordering one.

    There are several good OBDII apps. You can experiment yourself or browse the countless threads here on them. They are good tools to have, but not really made for monitoring the 12V even though they will give that info.

    Nope. First is a dual outlet USB port with voltage display for the 12V outlet. "I always have mine plugged into my 12V socket."


    Second is a bluetooth battery voltage monitor.



    You guys need to fix your ad blockers so they just block advertisements. Every time I paste a link to an Amazon product, it converts the code from what I type to something like this:

    Some of us aren't running ad blockers, we run JavaScript blockers. My purpose isn't to block ads, it's to avoid other people running their stinking code on my computer (which, in older, saner times, is what we would call an "intrusion"). After all, my computer was not bought for the purpose of doing stuff for other people, the way Amazon's or PriusChat's servers were.

    As a side effect, blocking JavaScript does tend to show me fewer ads. Any ads just straightforwardly included in the HTML would show up just fine, but as a lot of advertisers operate by running stinking code on my computer to go fetch the ads, well, those ads I won't happen to see.*

    So the real problem with the Amazon links is not that PriusChat saves them as [MEDIA=amazon] links when you post. The problem is that when it renders a [MEDIA=amazon] link for display, it gets rendered as some stinking JavaScript code that has to be allowed to run on the victimreader's computer or nothing but blank space shows up.

    If the rendering even just included a simple <noscript> variant that showed a plain run-of-the-mill link, why, the inconvenience would lift like fog in the noonday sun.

    * There is, in fact, a tiny violin emoji, but PriusChat strips it out when I insert it here.

    I think that's the real problem. What's pasted from Amazon is simply a link, but it gets converted automatically to a script that shows the image and therefore gets blocked. I looked at the source and, among other things, it calls up a .js file. There doesn't appear to be a way to post a simple text version of an Amazon link.

    Another update.

    It (lights, service hybrid system warming, etc) happened again. Wife said voltage showed good when it happened, or at least immediately after, at about 14.6 volts I believe. Basically it’s normal “running” voltage.
    Toyota insisted it was a battery issue, so we bought theirs, which, by the way, is crazy expensive.
    It happened again that same evening.
    Toyota said they wanted it again, and said they re-synced the modules, whatever that means, and we should be good. That was Friday 4/8. Tuesday 4/12 it happened again.
    Obviously NOT the battery.
    They got it back that evening, and a tech called Wednesday evening asking about the issue and when it occurs. I explained, again, that it was very random, and sometimes it would happen the same day, or up to two weeks later. We found no single thing that would cause it, be it miles driven, temperature of vehicle or outside, etc.
    He seemed very focused on the communication errors, or U codes, and when I asked if it was possible it could be related to the recall and an inverter problem he was certain it was not related, though I didn’t get a good feeling about his knowledge of hybrid systems or his troubleshooting ability in general.
    They are supposed to contact Toyota engineering to hopefully get an answer.
    Now we wait for that.

    Update again.
    They, including someone from Toyota, decided it was the steering angle sensor. What a load of dung this has been, and continues to be.
    Any guesses if that fixed it before the spoiler to follow?
    They had the car for over a week to figure that out.
    They claim they had a Toyota rep assist in that diagnosis, and they were positive it was good to go.
    After the fact, I am fairly positive the rep was not on site, and only listening to the tech, who I believe at this point shouldn't even be changing oil.
    Not only did that not fix it, but now we have a noise while turning the steering wheel.
    Lights/issues all came back within a day. They said on Monday that they would need to get in touch with Toyota again to see if they could get someone to come look at it, and would get back to us. The following day they said they couldn't get it in until the following Wednesday because that's the soonest someone from Toyota was available.
    Today the car refused to "READY" for quite a while, though it did finally cooperate.

    Ive said it before, but at this point, I believe they are unable to fix it because they are unwilling to do some actual troubleshooting.
    They want to throw parts at it instead of looking at what powers all the systems that are losing communication, and what else is upstream of those systems. I'm personally still leaning towards the inverter, but they are SURE that's not the issue, although they cant seem to figure out whatever else it might be.

    Anyone know if calling Toyota customer care would give any decent result?

    So the final update from this dealer.
    They decided this time that the remote start was the issue because they believe it is blocking communication with the modules. That’s not really possible, but whatever. Their plan is to disconnect it, then let my wife drive it, who’s scared to at this point, until it acts up again.
    On top of that, when I told them I wasn’t too happy with that result, as it puts whoever drives it at risk, because it’s already left us sitting for almost 2 hours because it wouldn’t become ready, they apparently thought that was unreasonable. Someone who failed to identify himself further than a first name calmed me back to discuss it and began arguing with me about it, saying they’d only had in in their shop twice.
    I guess maybe it’s that common core math or something, but I get 7 when I add up the receipts we have from them, including the most recent.
    Customer service is dead I guess.
    Or maybe that’s what I get for not going to a bigger dealership, but I’ll fix that soon enough.

    my check hybrid system warnings (and strange feeling brakes) stopped cold, when I took dealerships advice and took my scan gauge II off the OBD port. This was several years back now.

    I certainly hope that takes care of it, but very odd for it to just start acting up 4 years after install. If that does it, we’ll be as happy as anyone, but I do have my doubts.
    They actually called this morning (different person than the angry fellow yesterday) and asked if they could drive it a good distance to pick up some parts, to see if they could get it to do it’s thing.
    I said heck yes you can drive it!
