Hello PriusChat Community, I’m experiencing an issue with my 2009 Toyota Prius Gen 2 where the fuel door opens but won’t stay closed. I’ve attached a video showing the problem. Has anyone else experienced this issue with their Prius Gen 2? Any advice on what might be causing this and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!
The fuel door latch consists of a spring loaded plastic pin that engages the "hook" on the door. When you pull on the release handle, a cable retracts the pin and the door pops open. From your video, it looks like the pin won't come out. Don't know if the handle or cable is stuck, or if the spring is broken. Here's what the pin looks like on my Gen2 in the "at rest" position (ready to catch the door). Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Usually you can spray some krpil or wd And then tap on where the pin would usually be or use a little punch and push on it and you may be able to get it to start popping out and then you can grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull it out and then you can work it in and out with some silicone grease or something to lubricate it and get it to work
Check that the metal "hook" on the door isn't bent. That can happen if somebody accidentally leans against it. This is sort of the flip side of the sticking pin. If the pin won't come out far enough the door won't stay closed, and if the hook is bent away from the pin it won't stay closed even if the pin is all the way out.
About six or seven years ago I had a fuel door that wouldn't close. The problem was the bent "hook" you describe. A pair of needle nosed pliers took care of getting everything in order again.
