Hey fellow Prius owners, I'm having an issue with my 2008 Toyota Prius inverter coolant pump. My original pump went out about a month ago when the vehicle gave me the dreaded red triangle and after doing tons of research, I learned that the inverter coolant pump needed to be replaced. So we ordered an aftermarket part and installed the new pump. The first one ran fine for about a week before the red triangle came back. I contacted the company that sent me the pump and they sent me a replacement, which we installed. Again, we installed it. However, this time we decided to flush, drain, replace, and bleed the coolant just to make sure that the coolant was good. This time, the red triangle came back after two days of driving with the new inverter coolant pump. We popped the hood last weekend and the pump isn't even working at all. So I haven't been able to drive the vehicle at all till I get it fixed. So, I've decided to order an OEM part, (haven't ordered it yet) which is more expensive than the aftermarket part we purchased. My question is, should I be looking at something else that could be responsible for causing the pump to not work properly? I'm not sure what to look for and the last thing I want to do is to purchase an expensive OEM product only to find out that it's something else that's ruining the pumps. I am trying to hold off taking it to the shop because it's so expensive. I'm hoping that someone else has had this issue and they are willing to share what worked for them. TIA, I appreciate your help!
As long as you are bleeding the inverter cooling system after installation, then that's it. The pump needs power, ground, and coolant to move. I only use pumps from the local Toyota dealer - no problems. (Put over 60k on my 2006 since doing the pump). For bleeding, I put some clear flexible tubing on the bleed screw fitting (on the front of the inverter assembly). Hold the other end in the coolant reservoir fill port. Ready the car, then open the bleeder screw a turn or so. Coolant and any bubbles should flow into the reservoir. It can take several minutes before the system is fully bled. (If the pump has air stuck in it, you'll hear it whine, it's really quiet when there's no air). Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
What part of the United States are you in If you're not in the '90s yet you can drive the car around town until forever. It's only when it gets real hot and you're really taxing the system that the system will throttle back the charging and any of that and then you'll probably barely even notice it unless you're hill climbing or something so you're in no worries there but obviously you have other vehicles and this is not a big problem or you do all your driving on the highway or something even then I drove a generation two on and off the highway and what have you for four or five days with an inverter pump not working at all and there were no ill effects none at all very boring I didn't even notice any throttling back on the charging or anything like that of course we're not doing anything too crazy so there's always that there's nothing taking out the pumps per se You bought cheap fakes and they last anywhere from a month to 90 days something in that range then they croak as far as I know the real Toyota brand still pretty much goes the distance so for the $130 it seems to make sense if you're going to get 5 plus years out of it more like 10 but we're just going to cut back to five in case everybody's having a manufacturing problem I don't know. Usually you can buy them from the dealer online have them sent to the store and get the best discount like that and there are a few other places online that apparently sell the factory part so there's that too and they're all within a few dollars of each other there's no huge end of the world savings on 130 or so dollar part so the third time will be the charm I guess and I guess by now you figured out to just take the three bolts out of the pump leave the bracket in the car use clamps to close off the pipes or the hoses that way there you're not having to really add anything half a pint or something
The majority of these parts are garbage. Buy an OEM and it will work reliably. According to some Aisin makes the OEM inverter pump, but I cannot confirm this. Even if they are correct we don't know that the ones Aisin sells have not failed QC to be a Toyota OEM part and have been grey marketed under the other brand name.
