Please take a look and listen to my video of the sounds I hear in my 2008 Prius. What can the knocking sound be? The pump whine noise sounds okay right? And the inverter coolant movement seems normal? The coolant color doesn’t look as hot pink as some others though, and it seems low? Should I top it off with new coolant or change it? Car has 167k miles on it.
Just top off the inverter for now and that sounds like your coolant control valve or something clicking away so right next to your inverter pump on the inside of the radiator you'll see the coolant control valve put your hand on us that what's making the clicking noise usually the inverter pump doesn't make that kind of noise at all everything else sounds pretty normal
Is the sound louder towards the lefthand side (US driver's side) down behind the headlight enclosure?
I think it sounds loudest near from of the inverter tank, middle of car or slight left of inverter cover, as I’m facing the engine in a US car. Got the coolant from dealer today. Can’t wait to top it off and see/hear when my girl bring the car home. Hope I don’t have to change the valve or pump yet. Did get the P1121 and cleared it. Hope topping off will keep the code away for now to pass smog first.
Yup, topping up the inverter coolant worked. No more funny sound but a smooth whining voice from the pump. Hopefully that is all.
I’m mentally ready to do it after watching so many DIY videos. When I do, it’ll be going through the headlight. Ideally it’ll be done at the next coolant change interval. What’s surprising is how the small amount of extra coolant can make a difference in operation. It was right below the ridges but not below the low mark. Will keep an eye on it to see how long it takes before it drops below full again.
When you change the inverter pump you leave the gold bracket in place and remove the three gold screws that hold the pump in but first you slide the clamps back off the two hoses that go to the pump this way here you're just lifting the pump off putting corks in the hose ends unplugging the pump and bringing it up to you without doing anything to the headlight using a quarter inch drive long extension a 10 mm socket and corresponding ratchet pair of long needle nose pliers to grab and undo the plug You should do all that while the screws are in so you're not pulling against the floating pump. And then you just put the new one down there and remove the cork slide a hose onto the barb remove the other cork slide the hose onto the barb put the electric connector on. Let the pump drop on the bracket apply the three gold screws throw your new bracket that you took the pump off of away or save it for a rainy day or who knows this way it makes the pump 8 minute change If you want to do the bracket there's something in your way that you have to undo from the firewall because there's other things on that stud like the coolant control valve.
Be aware that the CCV is in the engine coolant loop if that P1121 comes back. P0A93 (if you get that) is about the inverter coolant loop.
