This is one part you don’t want to buy new because it costs more than the car. Get it from eBay or a junkyard.

The mechanical fit is probably OK. Perhaps you might need some trim. However, the firmware will probably conflict with the firmware of the multimedia computer, as it has a different screen resolution and aspect ratio unless the system can automatically adjust for the screen resolution and aspect ratio as in a plug-and-play device. There might also be a way to change the settings by using a communication tool though.

    Hi all,

I've been watching this thread for a while now and I have some good news to report!

Using the info Ryan Kim had posted about his experience with the swap, I bought a used XLE 12.3" head unit (86100-47850) off eBay and attempted the install using the existing 8" wiring harness. I'm happy to to say that everything works including the volume knob and volume control on the steering wheel! Just like Ryan predicted, if you have an XLE or LE with the 8" head unit you HAVE to use the 86100-47850 unit so you don't lose control of your volume adjustments due to the internal vs external amplifiers.

The only thing that is a bit strange is getting connected to Toyota Connected Services. When I start the car, it automatically loads the profile of whoever owned the head unit before me. I can still connect my phone and use Android Auto, but right now there is no way to delete the existing profile and login to my profile. I also can't add an additional profile. Strangely enough however, it seems like all the functions on the Toyota App are still working and reporting my mileage, tire pressure, and door/window status.

I believe the issue with the Connected Services is that head units are linked to the VIN of the vehicle so this may require a trip to the dealership to go through the VIN verification process and link this new head unit to my car. Not sure if they would even be willing to do that for me. Or maybe I can hard reset the head unit somehow, start fresh, and re-login to my profile? Let me know if any of you have insight towards this!

Good to get confirmation that its a plug and play. I just ordered an 86100-47850 off of eBay to do the same retrofit to my 24 Prime XSE.

FYI - All these ebay auctions list a VIN the unit is off of. You can plug that into Toyota's free vin decoder (Toyota VIN Decoder - Find Vehicle Specifications By VIN | Toyota.com) to confirm if its a Limited/XSE Premium screen (47860) or XLE/LE/XSE screen (47850).

I just installed the 12.3" infotainment screen on my 23 LE and everything works great (aside from the Toyota Connected Services, which I'm not interested in anyway, and no profiles show up in settings) Ended up finding one on eBay for around $900.

I made a simple tutorial for anyone else looking to do the swap on their LE on my website:

2023 Prius LE 8″ to 12.3″ Screen Swap – Tutorials

Big thanks to Ryan Kim for doing all the research on this prior.

Perfect . . . thanks for posting the tutorial! I picked up an 86100-47850 off Ebay for my '24 XLE.

Appriciate @Boostgoose tutorial, @Evannnn96 experiments and all the research of good folks that came before!

Picked up 86100-47850 on ebay from a salvage yard, swapped it in. Profile is definitely an issue with using a salvage unit. I might've done a bad thing by switching to Guest before trying to reset the HU (now I can't sign back in to the old owner's profile, so my Reset option is grayed out since I'm a Guest). And since I'm a Guest, I couldn't link the App / Connected services to the car. This is fixed by calling with the SOS button or talking to 1-800 folks that will ask you to push the SOS button anyway.

I'll try to use a semi-advanced scan tool to see if there is a way to reset / wipe HU config, but that's a pretty long shot. Will also ask the dealer to wipe it next time I'm in for service, but that might cost infinite amount of money or will freak out the mechanic when they see a 12" HU on a Prime SE that doesn't come with it even as an option.

Oh, also it was fun to find the messages from the crash which resulted in this HU ending up in the salvage yard. Mine came from FL AWD non-prime, so I'm guessing XLE. Wish I could find the person who owned it and ask them to remove the car from their profile, though.

Not cost effective and not worth the cost and warranty void if the car is new or still under warranty - unless you have money to burn. Very interesting idea and research though.

It sounds like a straightforward removal and installation.

Has anyone called Toyota to see if they could swap the serial number of the radio? I’m assuming the VIN wouldn’t be an issue, since people have said the VIN stays intact on app. I’m an automotive locksmith and electrician, and most manufacturers lock the radio when you swap it. On Chrysler products you have to enter a password, and on GM you have to flash the BCM to make it work.

We don’t have that issue here, and the app still shows our same VIN. I just want to make sure Toyota will change the serial number on our Connected Services account. It’s obviously possible since they sell new radios, and they would have to do the same function for replacements. They’re going to make money off people using Connected Services, so assuming the serial number is clean, you’d think it wouldn’t be a big deal to swap it. Would obviously have to because there also has to be a Imei for the SIM card that connects the car to the internet. I assume it’s a built in sim kinda like a eSIM and the serial number change on radio would also activate that eSIM.

But before I spend all this money, I’d like to know. The range on the factory fob is terrible because Toyota wants people to use the subscription service— that’s why they removed the remote-start buttons on the fob. Plus, it’s hard to remote start with the fob anyway because if you don’t do it exactly right at the right speed, it won’t work. So if you’re sitting in the living room, the range is bad and the timing has to be perfect, which basically pushes you into buying the subscription.

I have Toyota TIS because I’m a locksmith, but I doubt it would change the serial number on my account. If anything, it would probably update or reset the head unit. If no one can confirm, I guess it’s worth calling Toyota.

Can anyone confirm whether the VIN changes on the radio itself to match your vehicle’s VIN? I’m not even sure if that’s a thing—I’ve never checked the radio’s “About” settings, and it’s 2 AM. But if there is a VIN in the settings and it doesn’t change automatically, then that’s definitely something that would have to be done via TIS.

I checked this no function my radio will not go into service mode to see vin. There is nothing in TIS maybe I can change radio and simply reset and scan QR code and connected services will work it obviously has some truth to it since the app still shows correct vin. I think I’m gonna try it IMG_0475.png IMG_0473.png
