Hi everyone, I see a lot of Gen5 prius doesn't start after a mild collision, after a small scratch or dent when airbags being deployed car doesn't start. Is there any technical explanation about that? Any safety fuse or capsule causing it? Lets presume 12V batt is ok situation.
All cars with an engine have a trip switch to cut off the fuel pump after a collision. Perhaps such also disconnect the traction battery. There is a reset for this switch; was in the trunks of sedans. Don't know if a different process is in place.
In early Prius generations the thing is called "circuit breaker sensor" and is a little box bolted on the side of the inverter, with a yellow(iirc) label. Not sure if that's where gen 5 has it. Independently, I think the airbag ECU remembers if it has deployed, with a trouble code that may preclude using the car.
edit: After looking into it, I don't think the following applies to the Prius. I looked through the repair manual and couldn't find anything like it. But I could be wrong, so I'm leaving the info just in case I am. I can't guarantee this applies to a Prius(I've never looked into it), but I know a lot of cars use something known as a pyro fuse. When an airbag is deployed, it triggers a small explosive charge in the fuse that permanently severs the power from the battery to the engine. How exactly that works in a Prius, I'm not certain. Would it cut the power between the 12V and the engine, or between the HV and the engine? I'll try to look it up. If you know where the fuse is located(and it's reasonably accessible), you can temporarily get the car moving by bypassing the fuse. But it needs to be replaced before the car repair is complete.
