When I had my head gasket replaced a few months ago, the shop over tightened the shit out of my oil filter housing cap. I also had just moved, and lost my awesome cap style oil filter wrench that I had. It fit so snuggly, it was difficult to remove from the cap once you tightened it, but I don't remember where I bought 10 years ago. Autozone, O'Reilly's and Napa didn't have any wrenches in stock, so I called the Toyota dealership, and they had one for $45. Perfect I thought. Once I got there I realized it wasn't a Toyota brand wrench, it was made by CTA. I took it home anyway, because I need the car to be ready for work in the morning. But when I tried it on the oil housing cap, it fir very loosely. I tried it several times, but it wouldn't hold onto the cap well enough to loosen it, it slipped off every time I used it, and I eventually stopped using it because I'm afraid that I'm stripping the plastic housing. I eventually had to give up and put new oil in without replacing the filter. I'm going to bring the car back to the shop that overtightened it and have them loosen it, but I'd like to get the right tool that fits snug, not this cheap, loose tool that slips off. Can anyone recommend a good quality oil filter wrench that actually grabs on, instead of this piece of junk Toyota sold me. Thanks!!

The genuine Honda oil filter wrench has always worked for me. Got it around 1990 for a Honda motocycle, when their automotive oil filters were larger diameter. Later they adopted the motorcycle size for their cars, so I was set. It’s indestructible, heavy gauge, stamped steel, 3/8” drive. Fits Toyota and Mazda too, in my experience.

Honda dealership parts departments will have it, or can get it in. Amazon apparently has it as well. I believe current part no is:

The one that fits the Gen 3 cartridge style filter the black funny looking thing is available at AutoZone Menards pep boys you name it I've got four or five of them laying around here plus it big set of channel locks does it very well too No it doesn't strip the plastic either even if you've tightened the piss out of it My Milwaukee 18-in channel locks fit it perfectly and if you hold it and don't do anything silly at the housing comes right off it doesn't even put any teeth marks in it ask me how I know.

A bit more info on the Honda oil filter wrench (it grates saying that, seems to a "socket" to me):

Can be driven either by 3/8" ratchet wrench, or a 17 mm box wrench
Inside face-to-face dim, measured with caliper: 64.5 mm

Interesting, Googling the part no on my (~1990 purchased) oil filter wrench, looks like it is still availaable:

And so I'm guessing you're saying this fits the plastic generation 3 cartridge holder housing or is this for the cartridge filter conversion done on the Gen 3?

    Both, they’re the same dimensions.

Thanks Mendel, I'll look that one up!

Tombukt2 My old one worked great, wish I hadn't lost it in a move. And I called every auto parts place in town and nobody had one in stock. I needed it that day, because I had already drained my oil, and needed to use the car the next day. Now that I have some time, I'll get a good one again.

Changing the oil filter post-oil-change, you'll spill maybe 1/2 a cup oil at most; it's well above the oil level in the sump.

The one I have the two I had for the generation 3 were made by a company called pit stop AutoZone and advance Auto carry the brand I found mine It does fit a 4967 spin on and the cartridge plastic housing of the Gen 3 that takes the cartridge I'm holding it in my hand mine is not Chrome like the new ones that I saw today at AutoZone but it takes a 7/8 or 3/4 wrench plus I think it's 3/8 drive whatever the square drive size it has yeah it's pretty good setup

I'm sceptical of the need/efficacy of the sockets with an extended sidewall with notches for the permanent housing stiffeners (per attached). For starters they only work with one configuration of such stiffeners, are not needed for spin-on style, and do they actually help any? Plus they tend to be cast aluminum.

Yeah that's mine but mine is stamp steel That's some kind of cast which is cool but yeah I don't know those edge things yeah they lock in the slots one or two of them locks in onto the cartridge thing in the generation 3 That's why you got to run it around until it lines up and then you push on it and one of those fins or whatever slide in

Our 2011 Prius plastic oil filter housing was on so tight I had to resort to using a 1/2 inch corded impact gun to remove it. It was torqued down so tight I was afraid the aluminum alloy cap wrench or the base plate the oil filter housing was attached to (the one that is replaced when doing the spin on filter conversion) was going to crack.

I had an aluminum oil filter housing ready to replace the plastic one with, so my last resort would've been to drill a hole through the plastic housing and stick a bar through it to bust it loose. Luckily, I didn't have to get that extreme.

When that happens here I just hit it with my two and a half pound dead blow hammer with a closed end wrench on it .
