Moving from a chevy volt to the Prius Prime I now have issues reaching my charge port at home due to the location of the charge port on the Prius. After doing a bit of research I found some companies offering this type of extension cable and wanted to see if anyone else uses one. I definitely don't want to get the cheapest option for safety reasons and one of the better rated companies offering this is EV Dance. They offer a 20 foot option which would be fine for me and possibly useful for travel as well. They also offer 3 different amp ratings 32, 40 & 50 amps. EVDANCE J1772 EV Extension Cord 32A-50A 21/40 FT Does anyone have any experience with this type of product and would the 32 amp version be decent enough for the Prius Prime? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
There are other options as well. But are you using the OE toyota charging cable, or are you using a dedicated wall mount EVSE ?
The car charger is 3.5 kw. You only need 20 amp wire. The 32 is more than enough. Seems expensive and that’s a lot of extra wire to have around. Backing in isn’t an option I guess.
This is the one I've been using for over a year: It's been perfect, and shows charging information on a display. I keep my OEM cable as a spare. Too expensive to risk losing it.
I ended up ordering the extension from EV Dance off amazon. It should allow me to charge my car from different areas in my driveway because right now i can only charge my car when backed into my driveway directly in front of my garage. This seemed like an easier and more flexible solution instead of moving my wall mounted level 2 charger.
Yes, I got it plugged in and is working great with no issues with my level 2 charger. Gives me 20 extra feet of length for charging. This will work with level 1 charging too.
I'm in a very similar position to, although I'm just going to use the level 1 charger with a short heavy duty extension cord to give me the length I'd need to go from my volts front left charger door to the prius back right location.
