I was telling someone about my plan to change the transmission fluid on my 2012 Prius. I have driven it over 270,000 miles and a change is long overdue. The statement made to me was that if you have not change the fluid in a very long time, particles will have collected in the fluid. The transmission is dependent on these particles for proper operation. The question is: If you are very overdue for changing the transmission fluid, is there a risk of doing so? Doesn’t sound right to me but I would rather seem stupid than be upset because I didn’t ask the question.

Way back in the day of three speed four speed and 5-speed automatics you know with the clutches and bands and all that inside of them people tried to make sense of this kind of nonsense I've actually seen the transmission not go forward and backwards after a flush drain and refill on like a TH350 turbo hydramatic that was well worn at least maybe possibly with some of that stuff but with a CVT with a belt and sheaves and whatnot I kind of doubt it I would think if anything you would want to try to keep that as clean as possible I don't care who says it's permanent fluid or any of that yeah it's permanent until it's time for you to buy a new car exactly so I let that sink in real good when people start talking about permanent It's permanent to them because I'm pretty short order they're going to be down getting a new loan getting a new vehicle and all of that It's written into them maybe It's not into me I am not looking to upgrade change cars any of that It's just not something that I'm interested in My car is a tool like a TS-18 snap-on ratchet you know oh well I'm not looking to change it out for something made by icon because it's there I'll keep what I have and keep it working and that will mean probably changing fluids.

It's the type of particles in the fluid that matters. Many years ago lots of people on PriusChat sent trans fluid samples in for analysis and the conclusion was that the type of particles that can cause increased wear were present in trans fluid that had never been changed, but that those particles weren't an issue if you've changed the fluid at least once. Suspect this is probably particles created when the vehicle was brand new and everything had not yet worn into place yet.

    Nope.

There's a link in my signature regarding transaxle fluid change. (on a phone turn it landscape to see signatures).

I thought you were going to ask if you could use peanut oil.

This transmission doesn't contain any of the kinds of clutches or brake bands and such that conventional automatic transmissions have. It's just a box of gears.

It also doesn't contain any belts, pulleys, or sheaves, despite what some might believe.
