Request a card - start bennies - change addresses...etc.

If you need something more complex then - yes....you're going to need a bean, and not a web page.

I'm one of the many FOOLS in America that believe that I can wait until my max retirement age instead of drawing early.
Of course, I will hedge my bets with my military retirement and a humble 401k.
Being debt free will help out too.

We here in PC are a well-seasoned lot, and so others will no doubt chime in with failures to access a live human that is possessing of both a desire to do their job and the ability to do so both pre and post DOGE.

 

We have 2 very competent Social Security Branch Offices within 15 miles that never fail to help you out when you go there - you have to take a number and wait your turn but a good book makes the time go fast.

 

You must have the only 2 competent ones in the country!

 

I tried login today and got the "your required to call"; so I did. The wait time was 20 minutes, so I opted for a call back. I tried login again from the SSA.gov and got in. Fast forward, 1.75 hours later I get my return call from SSA.

Great timing; I finished my taxes just before they called. Just happy I didn't have to put it off for another day........

 

That's actually not a bad deal if you think about it.

1.75 hours for a call back....during tax season 'might be' better than burning gas (or using amperes and risking getting your BEV vandalized) wear and tear, and the office wait time....
Besides.....thanks to the current tax laws, and according to fake news 90-percent of Americans take the standard deduction and according to the Googles you do not need any SS docs for this.
I might be completely wrong about this, since I'm not in that system just yet.

I filed, and got a return in January so either this is an 'upper 10 percentile' thing or there is something that I will need to contact the SS office about when I retire.

 

I will need to do this for 2025. I assume you need SS docs to show income from SS just like you need W2 from an employer. That said, I have been claiming income from Canada Pension Plan as SS income after currency conversion without providing documentation. There is an agreement counting it as SS income.

I was thinking that the SS department was set up like DFAS (Defense Finance and Accounting Service.)
I get documents from them electronically - and it involved the same 5-minute login.
Being the US government, they also mailed them out first class post, AND mailed me a additional post card informing me that somebody (me) had changed the password that they require me to change every 180 days.
The nebbishes at DFAS still use 2000's methods that proscribe passphrases.

I tell them every time I contact them that I prefer electronic-only communications.

THIS is why we both have and desperately NEED D.O.G.E. !!!!

DFAS is suboptimal, but I have never had a problem contacting them - or getting docs from them.
I have had a running multi-year battle getting my retirement points accurately paid to me but this is a process that every reserve retiree must go through and it's probably been this way since the end of the Civil War.......

My OSCAR-SIERRA plan for them and SS is to do what I have been doing since the 70's.
Slightly over pay.
File ASAP and use derived numbers for missing docs (I did this last year for $1200 in election board payments.)
This convenience cost me $10 last year and if they audit me.....THEY OWE ME money.

 

Why have you guys waited till the last minute to establish your log in.gov or any of the other methods of logging in to Social Security?

Last year we received a hard copy letter, an email reminder and a notice when we logged in to Social Security that for security measures they were going to a new log in system and to establish your new login in method immediately to make sure you could log in to your accounts.

so.... if you are a serial procrastinator expect trouble logging in to any government agency and all the frustrations and anxiety that come with waiting till the last minute to do some tasks.

I simply use 'ignore.'
Sometimes if I'm on an IOS device I will use 'delete and report spam' since it's the same basic number of actions.

I tried to do that with some of my company email, and Outlook would not let me.....so I use the same 'ignore' that I use in this forum for people that I do not wish to interact with.
I call it the 'adult ignore.'

I just pretend it's not there.

IIRC in IOS you can 'delete and report spam' without opening - maybe from the preview screen?

Pretty much the first sentence of the AI "solution" involves opening the text. Think I'll just delete unopened from here on.

 

I don't think that's a thing with SMS, but with RCS it may be.

I sometimes send messages to an RCS group with a couple people, and I always see a notation for one of them "message read by so-and-so", and not for the other. (Who does still, somehow, end up knowing what I said in the message.)

 

we never got a letter. after starting ss 4 years ago, i kept logging in when prompted by email to see what special surprises awaited me. after awhile of realizing they were pointless notifications, i stopped.
so when my tax form didn't show up, i was forced to. and of course, everything had changed.
