Having a RTOD issue

    Drove to MCDONALDS today no problem but after starting the car and pulling out if the parking lot the rotd came on suddenly.
    Got it home about 4 miles away and shut down the car. Tried to start it again and the ready light won't even come on. 2004 model.
    This is weird.

    Any idea guys as I have no way to read the codes?

    The best idea I can offer is to start by fixing that part of the story.

    Until you have a way to read the codes, you may need to rely on paying someone who can.

    Open the hybrid inverter coolant reservoir. With the car in READY position...do you see coolant moving around inside the container? Behind the drivers side headlight is the inverter pump....reach down and you can feel it running. If you can't it has died. This happens about every 100K miles. BUy a NEW one from a TOYOTA Dealership about $174....look up videos on yooo tube on how to replace it by removing the drivers side headlight. NA model. This is just 1 possibility. There are lots of others.

    Is the fan running in the back of the car pretty much anytime you're driving the car pull up at a stoplight and hear this fan running in the back right hand side of the car Is it running predominantly all of the time No maybe who knows find that out along with what's mentioned above about your inverter cooling loop and then we'll go from there of course you got to check your AM2 fuse and pretty much all fuses we want to have 12 volts going everywhere it's supposed to go all the time obviously your car is trying to tell you something you could go buy a cheap parts store they'll at least have a basic scanner and get the basic gist of the codes from that we can tell if there's any subcodes needed and maybe how to get those I don't know where you are so all of that too I guess it really doesn't matter can't imagine you can be an America and not be near a major auto parts store in which there are five to seven different brands depending upon what part of the country you live in but you never know

    how to get car to store is my problem.

    And that's the problem can't start the car to do these things.
    I feel like Im not explaining myself very well.

    my bad the 2nd one is the same just messed up the typing.

    As a side note cleared the ECM and got the car started again, oil was low and have read on here that can cause issues.
    12v was replaced during the summer.
    Inverter is working.

    This is the best overall car I've ever had but when it hiccups it can be a pain to diagnose.

    You You should do the down and dirty test from the service plug to ground and see if you count down to zero in DC volts on your test meter see if you have any inkling of isolation fault that will slowly cause all this funny business to go on until it gets worse and then it'll get worse on the light and then it'll get to the point where you have to clear the codes twice with an old style scan or just to make the car start again I usually check for this at least every 2 years

    When you need to identify an error, you have a choice - to give $100, $200, $500 to someone at a car service center so that he can tell you the code of your errors.
    Or you can diagnose it yourself for less money.

    There are several options for self-diagnosing hybrid car systems. This can be the Techstream program installed on your laptop and a cable that will connect the car and the laptop.
    Or an OBDII adapter and a phone with a program that can read error codes and broadcast them on the phone screen.

    or you can recognize that the P0AA6 HV Isolation fault is the only hybrid code that will give the RTOD, allow you to keep driving the car normally, but after turning the car off, will not allow the car to go to READY condition again. (unless the code is reset by either resetting with a scanner, or momentarily disconnecting the 12v battery. I had an 07 for a while that would get the P0AA6 every now and then after a heavy rain. Everything would clear up after the weather was dry for a couple days.

    Most code readers that are at the parts store are not capable of communicating with all 15 (or so) systems on a Gen 2 Prius. So even if you get there, you might not be able to retrieve the codes.

    I've had this type of problem before a couple of times before quite awhile ago and those time it was simply the AM2 fuse came lose from hitting potholes as far as I could tell. Had to have the car towed home the 1st time. Checked the fuse and it was popped up, put it back in,clear the code and it ran a couple of weeks till it happened again and I replaced the fuse and it been 4 or more years till now.
    So yeah weird things happen and I'm hoping it's the oil issue that shut it down and Im keeping a 10mm wrench in the car I think from now on.

    If you start burning oil....which mine started to do.....I just check the level more often and change the oil myself every 4K miles with Mobil 1 and OEM Filters from Wal Mart...or dealership.. If you haven't in a while clean and clean your hybrid battery fan in the passenger rear cargo area. I use compressed air and q-tips and spray alcohol. I have also run Marvel Mystery oil in the gas tank on every other fill up.

    it will tell me if the traction battery is the problem but my 1st experience with that mine just die out of the clear blue.
    Towed home and had it replaced by Green Been.

    yeah, as Im older I didn't check it as often should have during the winter......it's definitely on me.
