2003 prius runs suspect transmission problem

The red triangle comes on when certain trouble codes have been triggered. The first thing you need to do is use Techstream or other compatible scanner to retrieve the codes that the car is trying to tell you about.

 

That's the first problem to solve. Doesn't have to be Techstream, can be any scan tool capable of reading all the trouble codes from a gen 1 Prius. And you don't have to have access to it yourself, if you have access to somebody who has access to it.

If the "standard obd2 reader" that you have is showing you any trouble codes, by all means post those here. That'll be a start.

There's a good chance that reader may not show the trouble codes we need to see. Because there are so many possibilities, it really is more productive to get them read than to try to guess.

Having all the codes read would be the most helpful thing to do when this reoccurs.

 

Why did you choose transmission fluid?
The amount filled indicates that the fluid was disappearing.
Have you had any problems with fluid leakage before? Or is there something else you are not mentioning?

 

If you do not know whether the transmission fluid has been changed in 22 years, it is necessary to replace it completely by removing the pan and cleaning it from the dirt that has accumulated over 22 years.

 

The problem with your car is not related to the transaxle fluid. It seems to be more related to something overheating. That is why the car started and moved after it cooled down for 2 hours. The problem with the car will occur again, so be ready to scan for trouble codes.
