I bid on what it was worth to me, $16,000, but didn't win. It did sell: If it had not sold, I would have taken a trip to inspect and made an offer. But the seller claims to have more like this one. So I may yet take a trip but not right away. If he has more salvage titled vehicles, I'll bring back copies of their papers and ask the Alabama DMV if I could register it. Turns out I can replace my battery for $13,000 with a new-cell, battery pack. Salvage can mean flood damage to the electronics so research what the damage really was. Best to get the repair order and accident report.
That's not the end of Salvage issues. Many auto finance companies &/or auto ins co's will refuse or balk at taking on non-standard risks. Can You Get Insurance on a Salvage Title Car? | Progressive Learned this upon finding a killer bargain a 3yr old 89 Porsche - same rims & color, but w/ tan leather. It was stolen for the engine. With ICE replaced - it was a bargain ... BUT credit union wouldn't touch it - so we pulled a 2nd on the house. Yea - insurance was extra too. .
For most of my life "used" cars were a necessary financial evil, but I never bought salvage...for the same reason. You circumstances may be different. Good luck.
Insurance rules may vary by insurer and by state. When I bought a rebuilt Prius for a family member, I checked with the insurer beforehand. In Indiana a salvage title becomes a rebuilt title after the rebuilder fills out some certification paperwork and a state official inspects the car and signs off. The insurer would not insure it as a salvage, but would insure it as rebuilt, as soon as I faxed them the paperwork with the official's sign-off (which was before the state formally issued a new title saying rebuilt). That allowed me to drive it away, and the final rebuilt title came later.
Check out current Tesla insurance rates. Going wild compared to other makes due to repair costs and vandalism. Up 29% on average. 3 times normal compared against a data base of 97M cars.
when i asked my insco about a quote on a tesla, they said they needed the vin. but i couldn't get a vin because they were build to order
Last time I looked they were built right into the dash visible through the windshield. You can get a pretty darn close estimate just by giving any old VIN like that
