If anything. Sometimes I like to keep the car running (in these cold climes) while I get out for any reason. I can't seem to lock the doors or unlock the rear hatch when the car is running (in READY mode), Also, when the car is parked and plugged into a charger, the doors won't lock either. All I get is a long irritating beep. Is there some setting I missed, or is that just how it is?

For the long irritating beep, on the gen4 means that one of the doors is ajar - that's why it won't lock. You may also want to make sure the car is in Park too

    YMMV

That's just how it is. It's pretty standard practice these days to not allow remote locking of the doors with the vehicle running.

You have two options. If you are only going to be out of the vehicle for a bit, shut off the car, get out, lock it, then remote start it with the fob. That'll give you 10min of running before it shuts off again(20 min if you do a second remote start after the first runs out). The other option is to use your physical key to lock the door after you get out. Just note that you'll have to use your physical key to get back in again. The fob and touch door handle won't work again until the mechanical key has unlocked the door.

As for the rear hatch, do you realize there are two buttons under the lip? The one on the left is supposed to open the hatch; the one on the right is supposed to lock/unlock it. Try pressing the right button first(to unlock), then the left button. Or I find pressing the left button twice does the same thing. It beeps after the first press and opens the hatch after the second press.

For the charging, are you sure the car is off and all doors are closed? I don't own a Prime, so I can't be 100%, but I think the car's supposed to lock automatically when charging starts. I'd suggest actually reading that section of your manual a few times.

It still gives me the long beep when all the doors are closed, and definitely in Park.

I like the title of your post. : ) If it’s not in the manual, I plan on asking about the loud chime that goes off when locking the door. It’s awfully loud and hopefully can be lowered. With all this waiting time I should have the manual memorized by now.

Have you tried holding the key inside the car through the open window then reaching into lock & roll the window up while quickly pulling your arm (& fob) back out?

My gen 3 ignores any remote fob lock/unlock signals when it is in READY.

If I want to unlock the hatch, I have to use the unlock button on the driver armrest.

If I want to lock the car from outside, I use the mechanical key.

I miss the way I could lock my Gen 3 any time I wanted. When I parked somewhere to charge, I could lock it too.

Of course I could do that Mendel, but I wish I didn't have to. I don't think that's too much to ask.

In that case, I'd leave someone in the car in case the glass gets caught in a fist and the key fob slides down onto the carpet. It's stupid to be chained to a car that's holding you and won't let go.

    Modern car windows rolling up will not grab your fingers hand or arm. If they sense pressure prior to fully closed they will stop & reverse. But yes, the above presumes a person is coordinated enough, from outside of car to;
    with FOB in hand -
reach in drivers open window -
    activate window 'up' -
    pull arm out 'quickly' -

(if there's fear of dropping the fob, you could always wrap several dozen windings of duct tape around it on the back of your wrist )

While that is the design, it's also true that Toyota's manuals sternly discourage using human body parts to test it.

Putting the mechanical key in the door slot and turning it does exactly the thing I want in my gen 3.

The beep is telling you that leaving your car running and unintended can result in a fine from the police, and, if someone hops in and drives away or wrecks your vehicle YOU will be at fault, YOUR insurance will bone you and YOU have a huge liability problem and expensive lawsuit to defend if someone gets killed by your unattended running vehicle.

Stop being lazy, turn off your vehicle when you exit.

I won't get a ticket for stepping out to check my rural mailbox.
    That's just stupid.

Tell that to the cop writing you up because he just had a bad day dealing with another domestic incident telling the irrational wife beater that spousal abuse is wrong and illegal

Here in TO cars get stolen daily because they only got out of the car to get their mail or pick up smokes. The car owners are indignant when the cops write them up for stupidity after the report their car stolen

When the mechanical key locking method does not work, you can install an alarm with autostart.
