My wackamole project was closed to 3 years - replacing HV modules

    Last week I got the dreaded RTOD with replace hybrid battery code "P0A80", going back 3 year ago (July 2022) I replaced 2 bad modules on my battery pack. This proves that the longevity of replacing the modules is uncertain. Will replacing all of them is any better? IMHO 3yrs is probably not that bad for DIY considering that you can buy modules for less than $50. It's only your time and the uncertainty when it will fail is the major issue. Still I was able to drive it for 40 minutes with RTOD back home. Just don't drive with RTOD on for a long time because it will create serious problems to your battery or you could get stranded.

    After the first detection of errors on the record, did you not look at the frozen frame data? They would also point to the 11th pair of modules.

    The difference in voltage is more than 1V, one of the modules has five cells instead of 6, one is shorted.

    there's one bad module at block 11 and another one showed up when I'm individually recharging them.. full charge is only at 6.5 at different tries.. The other one also showed up which the FF data didn't show. All in all 2 bad modules on different blocks..

    When you use a faulty battery for driving, where some modules do not work, the load during discharging and charging is stronger on the remaining modules, as a result they quickly degrade.

    I'm no expert on NiMH batteries but this is what I noticed on the modules. I tried charging them individually (not reconditioning) and 2/3 of the pack were full within 4 mins of charging at 0.5amps. While the others took 20 - 30 minutes to full charge. The bad ones also took 20 mins to full charge but not reaching 8volt (6.5v only) I'm assuming that the modules that took 20-30 minutes to fully charge were good while the 4 mins ones were bad (or capacity is not that great)

    That's right, modules that charge quickly have low capacity. Such modules are potential candidates for errors in the high-voltage battery.

    The module has 6 cells of 1.2V, which together give 7.2V.
    There may be a case when, for some reason, a short circuit occurs inside the cell and it becomes a simple conductor, a jumper for the other five cells. The other five cells may have good capacities and parameters, but they will not be able to get 8.4V in total with a serviceable and charged module with all six working cells.
