His great grandfather probably said, "As a jockey my definition of a race is when you can smell the poop of the horses on the road"

At least he went along with the new fangled idea of cars.

“There will always be people inside Toyota passionate about developing electric sports cars,” Toyoda told AutoNews. “But for me, as the master driver, my definition of a sports car is something with the smell of gasoline and a noisy engine.”

What the heck is so controversial about THAT?

BEVs (can) offer vision-blurring acceleration and a properly tuned car with a good suspension can take the short way around a track even IF the rest of the drivetrain is about as exciting as a ride to a soccer match in a Johnny-Cab.
    In FACT!!!!
You can save about 180 pounds of weight in ANY race car by eliminating the driver and converting the whole sport into an up-scaled RC car event. ;)

When there is so much debate about ecology, why does no one ban racing sports cars that just stupidly burn fuel or energy? The efficiency of a sports car in the contribution to air pollution?

I get that some like the whoopie cushion sound of an old fashioned ICE and I’m fine with that.

But can’t the biggest auto company in the world manage to walk and chew gum at the same time?

The energy used to kick the cars around the track is a drop in the bucket compared to the energy used to transport the teams and fans to the events, and feed and care for them while they watch.

Even something like formula E electric racing requires huge amounts of jet fuel just to fly the teams and gear from track to track.

Yeah just googled “Tesla 3 0-60 time”.

I guess all you can do personally, is pick an efficient car, and drive less. I think the latter is a big factor.

I could give a rat's nice person about sports cars. I'm looking for an economical ride to work in the morning that I don't have to pay most of my salary for.

Outside of a handful of countries, EV adoption makes too much economic sense to be stopped:
    • lowest cost to operate - electricity, maintenance, and reliability
    • rapid technology evolution - better battery chemistry, several motor variants, and integration
    • proliferation of non-combustion electric power - wind, solar, and small-scaled nuclear
The strongest argument, is to see a refugee carry their most precious possessions:

    • Peak capacity 16 x 400 = 6,400 Watts (~4,000 W net)
      • Expected ~25 kWh per day
      • 25 kWh/day x 0.12/kWh = $3 savings per day
      • $3 x 365.25 = $1,095.75 savings per year
    • 25 kWh * 5 mi/kWh ~= 125 miles per day
      • 125 x 365.25 ~= 45,656 miles per year
    • Has independent 13 kWh battery for between sunset and sunrise

Gas stations were unable to pump fuel , people couldn’t make phone calls because nobody has a landline, refrigerators went down but many folks couldn’t cook their food with gas because the supply petered out in some areas.

Not everyone has such a roof, some don’t have any roof at all, and the solar cells in the knapsack on a stick are only enough to charge a cell phone.
