A proposal in the big bill is to start annual federal fees on cars. $200 for EVs, $100 for hybrids, and $20 on all others. The last won't start until 2031, but the rest are immediate. https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/04/29/congress/house-transportation-reconciliation-text-gas-tax-00315222 Previous thread on this topic was bloated, so started new. Because we need to punish anyone and everyone who disagrees with massive and total fossil fool industry dominance so we can destroy the planet as quickly as possible, while also killing as many people as possible with air pollution. Not too mention the importance of getting poor people to pay more taxes so rich people don't have to pay taxes anymore. And even more stupidly, how are they going to collect this fee? This isn't an IRS job... They'll literally require a whole new bureaucracy to makes these charges unless they require the states to do it for them and most states will collect that money and hold onto it until all the funds that Trump unlawfully took away from states are released. Seriously, the level of cluster*uckery going on right now unbelievable!!! The level of incompetence and massive over-spending while claiming they're firing tens of thousands in government is has almost no equivalent: "Despite promises to cut spending during the campaign and his first few months in office, President Trump's federal government has spent about $220 billion more in his first 100 days compared to the same time period last year. In fact, the government is now spending more, day to day, than was spent in nine of the last 10 years. The exception: 2021, when the government was spending trillions to fight the coronavirus pandemic and prevent an economic disaster." Despite Trump's promised cuts, U.S. spent about $220 billion more in first 100 days than last year - CBS News
Sounds like it'll be a ridiculous bargain for truckers, which do the most damage to the roads. Maybe that's still going to get hammered out, if anything ever even comes from it at all.
Does this include or exclude the 100+ billion that recently went missing from DOGE? That's after all the savings from laying-off all those federal employees in droves....... The politico article stated that the states would collect the federal tax through annual DMV registrations. Don't know how states that don't have annual registrations will handle it. Besides; I thought that all these tariffs, on other countries goods, would be generating a bunch of revenue for the Feds. Just like Mexico was going to build the wall - it worked last time.........
The numbers DOGE are claiming are constantly going down. Their fake claims of saving money is actually barely in the handful of billions range and once you figure out the cost of lost money due to judges ordering the most of the workers be rehired because the president didn't have the authority to fire the majority of them, you're talking about them costing the taxpayer more money than saving the taxpayer. What's more this administration is already being ruled against in 94% of the legal claims against them in court... There's never been an administration that has failed this bad over the the course of 4 to 8 years and he's done it in only 100 days.
The approach is certainly not well thought out. The impact on the road surface of a 3,500 pound vehicle is the same for an electric vehicle as for a gasoline or diesel vehicle. The fee must be collected for the weight of the vehicle daily.
Yeah if they want to level this out properly the class 8 truck fee should be between 9000-10,000x as much as the regular car fee. So maybe $200k per year per semi truck? ...and if BEV cars are taxed at 5x the fossil rate, then a BEV semi truck should generate a cool million a year in tax revenue. But that's all just games. This bill isn't going anywhere. Even if it does get anywhere it won't look even remotely similar when it comes out.
This is being pushed back against and wouldn't go on until 2030 in any case. Trying to make the numbers look good over a ten year period is an old trick. Load all the objectionable stuff in the period after the next election.
Your second point is entirely false... Republican presidents have a long history of boosting spending in ways that creates fraud and waste. Democratic presidents on the other hand have a long history of being way more financially responsible and eliminating rather than creating waste. Of course the truth and facts doesn't matter if you're a Republican anymore, it's just all about lies and oppression at all costs with zero accountability.
