What is a safe temp range for the prius battery? Google says anything beyond 43C could be damaging to the battery. When I let the prius try to cool the battery off on its own it doesnt go past fan speed 2 until it hits in the low 40's, then it only goes to fan speed 3 until like 47C. When I use my prius app through the bluetooth obdii connector it forces the fan to go to speed 6 as soon as it hits high 30's to try to keep it below 42. Im just wondering if im being paranoid or if its good to keep the hybrid battery lower to make it last longer.
Hi! HybridAssistant (an android OBD2 app) has a setting to cool or warm up the hybrid battery. It tries to cool down the battery if it goes over 36 degrees C (default, you can change it) and to warm it up, if it is under 15 degrees C (default as well). It does it by controlling the hybrid battery fan (and yes, it goes all the way up to stage 6 of the fan, you can definitely hear it working in the cabin). Normally, you want it comfortably tempered in your car, so it uses the cabin air to bring the battery temperature up or down. Works better if you have your air conditioning on Mat
The cooler the battery the longer its lifespan... Some people have put a flexible pipe from the AC vent to the air intake for battery cooling fan... Alternatively getting used to driving around with AC on as cold as you can handle will help. Of course on a super hot day your AC is gonna strain your hybrid battery if you use it too much. So 'ya gotta find a balance, or just don't drive in hot weather.
the design of the gen 3 prius battery cooling system doesnt make sense. Why is there no direct ac to it? why is the air filter on the exhaust and not the air intake? It seems they fixed that in the corolla hybrid, that they filter the air on the intake. I think it still uses the cabin air to cool it down though, but at least its a smaller area to cool than the entire open prius. the back doesnt get much ac.
??? If the ac is running, the hybrid battery IS getting ac. The hybrid exhaust air goes out through the trunk, there is no filter. I think that maybe you've been miss informed, or don't understand the system.
A user here says the ac blows over the battery. But then again the rear seats are right in front of the battery so you would turn on the ac and find a way to get the obd2 to Turn the fan on level 6
The air for the hybrid battery comes from within the cabin. So if you have the ac running, it's pulling that air in, and over the hybrid battery.
If you somehow turn the high-voltage battery fan upside down, it will start blowing air into the cabin. That's the only thing I can think of.
