12V Battery Correct Type/Spec?

    Today I finally got around to attaching the vent hose to my battery. The hole on the battery was too small about 5.5mm in diameter, used a 7.5mm drill bit going slowly and fits perfectly now. Also had to plug the other end as it didn't have a plug so got a bit creative with that.

    Whilst fitting the vent hose it got me thinking as to why the hole was such a small diameter.

    What sort of 12V battery should the car use? Should it be a start/stop one? As the current one isn't a start/stop one from the little info I can locate on it.

    The one that the car came with (second hand) is a Pavilion NS60R, looking online there is little to zero information on it, dimension wise it fits perfectly into the battery compartment spot and the terminals are also the right ones. The battery sloshes if rocked a bit as if there is water inside (mentioning this as may help with identifying the type)?

    Also makes me wonder as this battery cost only £66.00 new. The cheapest recommended battery based on car retailer websites AGM one I can find in stock is £164.50 (Yuasa HJ-S46B24R AGM Auxillary Car Battery: Type 057) otherwise out of stock £90.36 (Hankook AXS46B24R AGM Starter Battery: Type 057).

    I have so far had 0 issues with it, I don't really want to go out buying a new one if not critical - would rather let the battery die before replacing. Is there any potential damage that could result from this?

    Well apparently where you are you can get non-agm batteries in this group size kind of hard to find here in the states especially with the right terminals on the top and if you're willing to change from that you have all kinds of options but I wouldn't see any problem I would run it until it dies myself that's exactly right unless you got the money and you just going to change it for an AGM battery and just wait till the next time and do it then or if you're happy with the wet cell flooded type use those if you can get them

    WHY did you plug the other end??? Where are the gases going to go?
    And you really should use an AGM battery. Acid batteries give off gases, and that vent hose
    is not enough. You could be breathing it....

    OEM from Toyota is the best option, but there are others.
    Just make sure you fully charge it before installing it.

    Another designation accepted for this battery 46B24R.
    You can find many manufacturers by this size designation. The difference will probably be in the quality of manufacture. Panasonic AGM batteries can work for ten years without problems with regular maintenance. Deep discharge is destructive for any battery.

    The Prius only has 1 vent hose? So one end is connected to the hose for ventilation, the other end plugged, otherwise makes the hose redundant/potentially letting in gases into the cabin otherwise if left open?

    Isn't that the way the OEM battery is installed as well?

    One end is in the battery, the other goes through the bottom on the trunk to vent outside.
    It is not plugged. At least, mine was not.
    What would be the point of having the "vent hose" if you plug the other end? HOW could it vent?
    Either the battery wouldn't have the vent hole for the hose to plug into, or it would be plugged on the battery.

    I think there has been some confusion :LOL:.

    When I was referring to vent holes I meant the battery comes with 2 vent holes in total on either side (right/left). Both had been left open. I attached the vent hose which is now connected to the battery and the other end does indeed vent outside. I then plugged closed the other open hole on the battery so that doesn't vent into the trunk/cabin etc as would just be left open/exposed otherwise.

    What you wrote, and what you meant, where two different things....
    Seems like you have the incorrect battery for your Prius then.

    The battery (Walmart S46B24R) that I looked at closely in the USA has a vent hole near the positive terminal post, which is open to the inside of the battery. There appears to be another vent hole near the negative terminal post, which is sealed off from the inside of the battery. If you take a very close look at your battery, I think you find the same thing.
